...the committee concerned to watch with all seriousness that paper and
binding be durable. In excuse of this shortcoming it was stated that we
still have too small a stock on hand; once that stock grows larger, so
that the paper can dry out better, the binding too will become sturdier.

Connected to this subject was the report of the directorate of the
synodical printing house, established since 1869, together with the
preparatory committee's remarks. The committee recommends that the Synod
take over the printing house now, along with its still-modest debts. This
the Synod then did by resolution. But now the question arose: in what
manner should the printing house be run in connection with the book
business? The printing house's previous directorate had brought before
the Synod proposals for regulating this matter, which were first read
aloud and then discussed in detail:

§ 1. It reads as follows: The present directorate of the synodical
printing house is dissolved and discharged, and the Synod takes over the
existing establishment along with the few obligations still resting on
it.

Adopted.

§ 2. A new directorate, consisting of five or seven persons, is to be
newly elected for the period until the next regular session of the
General Synod, and thereafter always for such a period.

Adopted, with the further stipulation that the directorate shall consist
of seven persons.

§ 3. The duties of this directorate are, in general, in the name of the
Synod, solely for its benefit and answerable and liable to it in every
respect: to administer the synodical typesetting shop, printing house,
and bindery, with everything belonging to them; to keep exact books and
accounts of all purchases concerned, work delivered, expenditure and
income, etc.; and to oversee the general agency. It goes without saying
that the directorate is to regulate all salaries in the bookstore,
printing house, typesetting shop, and bindery according to the respective
qualifications [of the employees].

Adopted [printed "Angnommen"].

§ 4. rejected.

§ 5. (now § 4.) The directorate is to elect from its own number, and
supervise, the following officers:

a) A president, who is to preside at the sessions of the directorate.

Adopted.

b) A knowledgeable foreman [Factor] of the typesetting, printing, and
bindery establishment, who is to manage it and keep the relevant business
books.

This was amended so that the foreman shall not be a member of the
directorate, but shall be subordinate to it.

Translator's note: "Angnommen" (for "Angenommen") is printed exactly so —
a printer's error, transcribed as printed.
