Concordia⸗College in Fort Wayne.

...indeed no permission to have themselves insured, but leaves it to the
individual's conscience; it believes, moreover, that it would be useful to
take up this subject sometime at the district synods.
Concordia College in Fort Wayne.
First the report of this institution's board of oversight was read aloud,
along with the preparatory committee's assessment. Likewise a report
obtained by telegraph from Director Saxer on the state of health at the
College was communicated. Rector Schick, who the day before had spoken
very strongly about the unhealthy situation of our College — so strongly
that he called it a wrong to keep sending young people there where their
health would be undermined — now qualified his earlier remarks somewhat,
explaining that he had meant to stress, above all, the sad effects of the
climate on his own family; the state of health at the College itself might
have improved, especially since moving into the new building, but was
still by no means to be recommended.
Since the testimonies given before the Synod about the institution's state
of health contradicted one another, and since various other complaints
about the state of the institution had also arisen by rumor within the
Synod, the Synod resolved to send out a commission of inquiry to subject
the institution to a strict and conscientious examination of 1) its state
of health and 2) its moral condition. For this purpose one pastor and one
congregational deputy were appointed from each of the four districts. The
commission is made up of the following gentlemen: pastors Hanser, König,
Lochner, and Director Lindemann; deputies: J. Birkner, C. Eißfeldt, Dr.
Bünger of Altenburg, and Mr. Ostermeier. The committee is to report to the
General President, who will inform the Synod of the outcome as he sees
fit. —
A motion by the preparatory committee — to urge upon the congregations in
Fort Wayne that three acres of land, now obtainable for $1000 per acre,
and which might later prove very inconvenient for our College (for
instance through the establishment of saloons, etc.), be secured for the
institution, since the Synod itself could not raise the money for this
purchase at the moment — was adopted by the Synod.
It was further resolved: not to sell the building lot described in the
report at Fort Wayne, which might later prove suitable for erecting a
teacher's residence.
It was further resolved: that the building superintendent, Mr. Hengerer,
in Fort Wayne shall henceforth receive $500 annually, and that the $100
which the College students had previously raised for him shall instead be
paid out of the synodical treasury.
Since a new teaching position is to be established at Fort Wayne, the
question was raised whether a new teacher's residence should not also...
