zu fühlen iſt, d. i.
Daher
Schullehrer⸗Seminar in Addiſon.
Gebäude in Addiſon aufs neue in guten Geſellſchaften verſichern laſſen, ſo

...became convinced, after careful deliberation, that there was no reason
to abolish the professorship created in 1869; on the contrary, many
reasons argue for keeping it, for Professor Schmidt, currently active at
the institution — who was employed by the Norwegian Synode (although he
was called by us in the first emergency) — will be retained by it and must
devote his main energy to that synod and to Norwegian and English
[instruction]; likewise it is uncertain whether Pastor Ernst, whom the
Wisconsin Synod called for our seminary, is suited precisely for those
subjects where the present shortfall is felt most, namely Hebrew and
church history, along with exegesis. For the latter there is indeed hope,
but not so much for the former. — Since Rector Schick in Fort Wayne has
resigned, the committee ventures to propose him for the professorship.
The Synod recognized the urgent necessity of appointing a professor in
place of the fallen-away Preuß. Therefore it was
resolved, that this professorship at the Concordia Seminary shall not
lapse, but shall be filled again.
As to a person suited for this post, however, the Synod could not agree
after a lengthy debate; in particular, several synodical members could not
accept the recommendation of Rector Schick for this post, because they did
not consider his resignation [from Fort Wayne] justified. In the end the
whole matter was left to the electoral college.
The Teachers' Seminary at Addison.
The report of the board of oversight of the Teachers' Seminary at Addison
was read aloud. The motions made in it were recommended by the
preparatory committee, and the Synod gave its consent to the construction
of a new teacher's residence, according to the best judgment of the board
of oversight concerned.
The Synod then declared itself in agreement with the provisional
appointment of Dr. Dümling, but could not immediately agree on
recommending him for permanent appointment to precisely his present post,
since his teaching gifts might well also be needed for Fort Wayne. In the
end the Synod left this matter to the electoral college. The salary of
the new teacher to be called in any case was set at $900.00, along with
free housing.
Since a motion from the board of oversight proposed that the Synod have
its buildings in Addison newly insured with reputable companies, the Synod
resolved: that we, as a Synod, precisely in our present age which believes
in no living God, do not wish to have our buildings insured, as a factual
testimony against this unbelief. This is not meant to lay any burden on
the conscience of individual synodical congregations and members who
still have their churches and private houses insured. The Synod gives...
