If, however — which is by no means to be expected — the case should
arise that the general agency's needs for a year, say to launch a new
publication, exceeded the average annual amount of its surpluses, then
under item d of this section the authorization and mediation called
for there, from the bodies named in it, would be required.
§ 8.
Finally it will be necessary to incorporate into the instructions for
the synod's general treasurer those articles occasioned by § 7 of the
present report.
With the synod's unanimous adoption of this report, the appointment
of a general agent for the distribution of the synod's printed matter
was thereby resolved; the election of that agent, as well as of the
"Committee on Printed Matter," took place along with the election of
the other officers.
Our Church Periodicals
Mr. Wiebusch, a printer, submitted a letter in which he offered to
reprint the first three volumes of the "Lutheraner" and to supply them
bound in a single volume at $2.00 per copy. From many quarters a keen
interest was expressed in the synod for a reprint of these volumes,
since it would be most desirable to learn the early history of our
synod from them. The synod passed the following resolution on the
matter: the "Committee on Printed Matter" to be appointed shall
without delay arrange for the reprinting of the named volumes of the
"Lutheraner," fix a suitable price for them, and hand over their
distribution to the general agent to be elected.
Further, a written petition from the students of Concordia College
came before the synod, asking that its publications be supplied to
them free of charge. Since the greatest number of the students
concerned do not have the means to pay for the synod's publications,
this petition was granted, and the grant was extended as well to the
students of the Fort Wayne seminary for preachers and schoolteachers.
Professor Walther reported that on his journey in Germany he had
found that not a few people would gladly read our synod's
publications, but either did not know how to obtain them or had
complained about their too-high price, and he therefore proposed
that we always have a certain number of extra copies printed and
sell them in Germany at cost. The young bookseller Naumann, son of
the well-known bookseller, a faithful Lutheran, had declared himself
willing to take up the distribution of our publications with
devotion, and gladly to help ensure that they be spread as cheaply
as possible in Germany. The proposal made was unanimously carried.
Professor Lange and Conrector Schick were, on motion, appointed
co-editors for "Lehre und Wehre" [Doctrine and Defense]. With
