der ev.⸗luth. Synodalconferenz von Nord⸗America. 1902. 85
IV.

Achtungsvoll
A. W. Meyer, Präſes.

IV. English Mission.
From the president of the English Lutheran Missouri Synod the following submission had been made:
Petition of the Ev. Luth. Synod of Missouri of the English Language to the Honorable Synodical Conference [*Synodalconferenz*].
Honored fathers and brethren!
On pages 145 and 146 of our last year's synodical report there are found the following resolutions, which I herewith submit for your kind attention:
1. "Whereas our delegates to the last session of the Synodical Conference report that this general body of our church recognizes vividly the growing necessity of the use of the English language in the spread of the glorious truths of our Lutheran faith: therefore be it
"Resolved, that our delegates to the next session of the Synodical Conference be instructed to present the work of our synod in this direction to the Conference and to request it to help us in our endeavor, to support us and also to lend a hand."
2. "The Synod further instructed its delegates to ask the Synodical Conference to publish an English conference text (standard edition) of Dr. Luther's Small Catechism with explanation."
Respectfully,
A. W. Meyer, President.
In reply to point 1 the Synodical Conference permitted the president, Prof. Meyer, to set forth in a rather long speech the necessity of the English mission. He pointed to the glorious successes with which this work had already been crowned, and also presented the request that the work of the English sister synod be supported financially. To the question how matters stand in the English synod with regard to the congregational school system, the answer was given that in the synod the usefulness of the congregational school is well recognized and efforts are also being made to set up such schools, so that reference can indeed be made to several existing congregational schools; yet these efforts did not succeed everywhere, for partly money is lacking, partly the congregation members live so scattered in the large cities that the children cannot well be gathered in congregational schools.
As to financial support, the Synodical Conference could give the brethren no promises, but expressed the view that the individual synods should promote the work of the English synod also through monetary contributions, say by setting up a special fund for
