der ev.⸗luth. Synodalconferenz von Nord⸗America. 1902. 75

ſich Ihre Committee vorigen Dienstag⸗Morgen an dieſem Ort.
Blatt beigelegt.

Der Ihrer Committee vorliegende engliſche Text wurde von Prof. M.
Loy im Auftrage der Ehrw. Synodalconferenz hergeſtellt. Eine Auflage
von Prof. Loys Ueberſetzung wurde im Dietrichſchen Katechismus gedruckt
und verbreitet. Darnach wurde dieſe Ueberſetzung von einer Committee
der Ehrw. Synodalconferenz geprüft und mehrfach geändert. In dieſer

Wortlaute in manchen Gemeinden Störungen verurſachen könnte.

of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America. 1902. 75

it was decided to refrain. These two last letters are enclosed with this report, since they properly belong before the Synodical Conference [*Synodalconferenz*] and Your Committee was not entitled to deal with their content.

In order to examine the proposals and wishes that had come in, Your Committee assembled last Tuesday morning in this place. The changes still made here are attached to this report on a separate sheet.

The English text before Your Committee was prepared by Prof. M. Loy on commission of the Honorable Synodical Conference. An edition of Prof. Loy's translation was printed and circulated in the Dietrich Catechism. Thereafter this translation was examined by a committee of the Honorable Synodical Conference and altered in many places. In this revised form it was adopted in the year 1878 by the Honorable Synodical Conference and has since been in force within the Synodical Conference as the standard text, textus receptus.

In this text a relatively small number of changes have been made, but only where, in the opinion of Your Committee, the sense of the German original could be expressed more sharply or more fully, or the language improved, and we have made it our task not to make changes lightly or without cause.

On the wording of the first three commandments Your Committee could not fully agree. We take the liberty of proposing that the text in its present wording be printed, say in pamphlet form or in a synodical paper, with a statement of the reasons for the changes made, and be definitively adopted at, say, the next Synodical Conference.

We would also remark that the variety of the German texts which are used within the Synodical Conference caused some difficulties.

The Synodical Conference resolved that the catechism text proposed by the Committee be printed and circulated in pamphlet form, so that everyone may have opportunity to submit further improvements to the Committee.

In connection with this, two submissions were read, one from the Louisiana Pastoral Conference, the other from Mr. Hilgartner. Both submissions emphatically express the wish that the Synodical Conference let the old text stand unchanged, since a change in the wording could cause disturbances in many congregations. Since the Synodical Conference, however, had come to a decision on this point, a discussion of the said submissions was dispensed with.
