St. Louis, April 1, 1887. E. F. W. Meier,
                                                Treasurer of the General Synod.

Examined and found correct:

                        H. A. Christiansen } Audit Committee.
                        H. Dümling          }

"The Audit Committee appointed by the General Synod for the
printing house, agency, and treasury carried out, on the spot, in April of
this year, the duty laid upon it, and by a thorough examination of the
publishing business, of the General Agent's books and cash, and of the
General Treasurer's books and funds, has satisfied itself that the
business affairs of the General Synod are conscientiously and faithfully
administered.

"As regards the book business first of all, it is again with heartfelt
thanks to God that we must praise the great blessing that has
accompanied our publishing house during the last three years. More
than half a million dollars has now already flowed from the proceeds of
our book business into the treasury of the General Treasurer.

"The Directorate's report gives the necessary information on the
details of the course of business. We would like to direct the attention
of the Reverend Synod especially to a few points of this report. One
concerns the sale of our schoolbooks in our parochial schools. It is plain
that a not inconsiderable portion of our schools do not use our books, so
that our book business likely loses about $5000 in net profit every year
because of it. We think that the dear congregations should exercise
oversight as to whether our books are also being used in their schools.
The teachers, however, should be required to introduce our books — or
else to raise whatever legitimate objections they may have to their
content or arrangement openly with the competent Board of Examiners,
so that, through improvement,
