that both professorships at the institution at St. Louis be filled again
at once, under the direction of an electoral college, toward whose
election the Synod promptly took the necessary steps.
After the electoral college had been elected by the Synod, and had
itself met several times for the purpose of filling those two
professorships at the institution at St. Louis, it came before the
Synod with definite proposals. After mature deliberation, the Synod,
in accordance with the electoral college's proposals, adopted the
following resolutions:
Resolved, that the Synod appoints Professor Pieper as successor to the
late Dr. Walther [des ſelig heimgegangenen Herrn Dr. Walther — "who
has gone home in blessedness," i.e., deceased].
Resolved, that the Synod at the same time also assigns Professor
Pieper the presidency of the theological seminary at St. Louis.
Resolved, that the Synod makes Pastor G. Stöckhardt, who until now
had been employed at the seminary only as a "half-time force," a full
professor at the theological institution at St. Louis.
Since a new teacher must now be appointed in Professor Pieper's place,
and since, likewise, an auxiliary teacher of a similar kind will probably
again have to take Pastor Stöckhardt's place, the electoral college, by
the Synod's charge, reserved to itself the taking of the necessary steps
for this at once, in accordance with its instructions.
Resolved, that the provision made by the last delegate synod regarding
the beginning of the school year at our educational institutions be
rescinded again for our seminary at St. Louis.
Resolved, that the beginning of the school year for our institution at
St. Louis shall henceforth be the second Wednesday in the month of
September.
Concordia Seminary at Springfield, Ill.
"As we prepare respectfully to render to a Reverend Delegate Synod a
report on the past triennium concerning the preachers' seminary at
Springfield, Ill., it behooves us above all to praise and glorify God for
the many manifestations of blessing, help, and protection that he has
so richly granted us also in the past three years. Indeed, the Lord has
done great things for us, of which we are glad. To be sure, through
the devil's cunning and envy, and through human weakness, there has
been no lack of various trials and painful experiences; yet God's favor
and faithfulness were new every morning, and the Lord's work has not
only prospered happily but has also, in the years past, expanded and
grown.
"As for the Reverend faculty, the Lord has kept all its members in
sufficient health and strength. To be sure,
