„Würde es aber dem hieſigen Agenten unmöglich gemacht, bei den

Fifth Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States, 1887. 79

"For if the Reverend Delegate Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States
wishes to see the important goal of the emigrant mission achieved here, then
not only must all emigrants moving into our congregations be directed to
the local agent for his advice and assistance, but he must also have the
necessary funds in hand to carry out what his duties require.

"But were the local agent made unable, amid the many German
immigrants landing here, to fulfill his duty as counselor and helper, he
would find himself compelled to ask a Reverend Delegate Synod to relieve
him of his office as superfluous.

"The foregoing comes to the knowledge of a Reverend Delegate Synod
of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States by a resolution of the local Emigrant
Commission, passed at its regular meeting on 20 January 1887. (Memorandum
of the Emigrant Commission at Baltimore, Md.)

Resolved, that the taking on of sub-agencies of the said steamship
company by some pastors of our synodical body be most severely censured.

Election Committee [Wahlcollegium]

Resolved, that for particular weighty reasons the election of the
members of the Election Committee be undertaken not only at the close of
the synod, on the occasion of the election of the other synodical officers,
but already now (soon after the sessions begin).

Resolved, that none of the professors at our educational institutions
may be put forward as a candidate for the Election Committee.

Resolved, that the following presidents [Präsides] and pastors be put
forward by the synod as candidates for the Election Committee:

F. J. Biltz; P. Brand; E. A. Brauer; C. Groß; J. A. Hügli; Fr. König,
sen.; G. Küchle; J. A. F. W. Müller; J. H. Niemann; C. C. Schmidt; Joſ.
Schmidt; H. Wunder.

The vote produced the following result:

H. Wunder 90 votes; F. J. Biltz 84 votes; Fr. König 80 votes; C. Groß
78 votes; E. A. Brauer 74 votes; J. H. Niemann 59 votes.

—

P. Brand 47 votes; G. Küchle 45 votes; J. A. Hügli 39 votes; J. A. F.
W. Müller 38 votes; Joſ. Schmidt 34 votes; C. C. Schmidt 25 votes.
