September be⸗

40 Proceedings of the 20th General or

as in the first year, when, as a result of excavations near the institution's
building, a genuine fever epidemic had broken out, a general prejudice
unfortunately prevailed in our Synod against Fort Wayne as an
extremely unhealthy area. Made anxious by this, the local Board of
Control finally resolved to engage its own college physician, through
whom the institution's good state of health was to be established. But
the opposite was achieved. Hundreds of dollars had to be spent every
year on the doctor and medicines. Since, however, we did away with this
arrangement again after the last Delegate Synod, and now call a doctor
only in case of actual illness, the expenses for doctor and pharmacy have
become so small — even though we, as at all the other institutions, let
the school year here too begin again on September 1 instead of October
1 — and the state of health among the institution's students has in
general proved so excellent, that in this respect we can confidently place
this institution beside any other within our Synod.

"Finally, thirdly, we have a certainly not unwelcome piece of news to
give the Reverend Synod: that, since the roof of the main building, which
was poorly covered from the very start, was already replaced with a new
one last year, and the relocation of the laundry facility from the ground
floor to the second story resolved on at the last Delegate Synod has been
carried out, and, by order of the local city authorities, a drainage canal
has been built through our land — we have this time no larger
expenditure to propose for the institution here, unless the Synod should
itself become convinced that a new floor ought to be laid in the first and
second stories of the main building.

"We take the liberty, however, following up on the resolution passed at
the last convention, according to which our motion concerning the
building of a new teacher's residence at Fort Wayne is to be submitted
to the next Delegate Synod for discussion and, if applicable, decision, of
pointing out that since 1874, when the building of four teachers'
residences at a cost of $11,000 was resolved on — of which, however,
only two were later built — $6372 has been spent on rent over the
years. We leave it to the judgment of the Reverend Synod whether it is
wise economy, in a place where there is enough room for building
teachers' residences, to pay out such sums in rent.

"As a result of the vacancy in the directorship, instruction in singing had
to be dropped during this school year. Only for the past few weeks has a
singing class again been held twice weekly. In reporting this, allow us to
state here that instruction in singing at this institution, in which young
people are trained chiefly for the service of the
