Proceedings of the Fifth Delegate Synod,

assembled at

Fort Wayne, Ind.,

from May 4 to 14, 1887.

J. N. J. [*In Nomine Jesu* — "in the name of Jesus"; the display fount casts I and J with one sort, so the first letter is by value an I and the third a J]

In accordance with a resolution of the Fourth Delegate Synod, held three
years earlier at St. Louis, Mo., and following the notice published in
"Der Lutheraner," the General Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and Other States
assembled as the Fifth Delegate Synod on Wednesday, May 4, 1887, at Fort
Wayne, Ind., and held its sessions there in the St. Paul's Church of the
Rev. Pastor H. G. Sauer.

On the morning of May 4, at 9:30, the synodical convention was opened
in the said church with a worship service, at which Director Ch. H.
Löber preached on John 17:20-21.

In all, seventeen sessions were held, nine in the morning and eight in
the afternoon. It was determined that these should run from 8:30 to
11:30 in the morning and from 2:30 to 5:00 in the afternoon. — Every
session was opened with singing accompanied by the organ, the reading
of a passage of Scripture from the Altenburg Bible commentary
[*Altenburger Bibelwerk*], and prayer and the Lord's blessing by the
chaplain appointed by the Synod, Pastor W. Achenbach, and was closed by
the General President [*Präses*] with the Lord's Prayer.

On Saturday, May 7, the telegraph brought the Synod the news that
Dr. C. F. W. Walther had gently and blessedly fallen asleep [died]
toward evening at 5:30. After this had been made known to all the
delegates in the churches on the following Sunday morning, the Synod
assembled that same Sunday, at 7:00 in the evening, in the church for
an extra session to deliberate when and how the dear body should
be buried. The Synod adopted the following resolutions:

1. That we ask the family and the congregations in St. Louis to
postpone the funeral until Tuesday, May 17, after the close of the
Synod;
