4. Prof. M. Loy was appointed editor of the translation to be furnished.
5. The following instruction, drawn up by Prof. F. A. Schmidt on behalf of the Synodical Conference, was given to those thus elected:
Instruction for the committee for the preparation of an English catechism.
a) The committee shall earnestly strive to produce such a translation as renders the exact sense of the original as literally as possible, yet in good, easily understandable and fluent English.
b) Every committee member shall acquaint himself as thoroughly as possible with the existing translations of the catechism, as well as generally with the various possibilities in the choice of expression, and collect notes on them.
c) The chief editor shall work out an independent translation and, as soon as he has completed it, send it to all members of the committee either in manuscript copy or in print in the "Lutheran Standard," and also point out in an accompanying letter any doubtful or especially important and difficult points.
d) Every member of the committee shall, after careful examination of this translation, send his possible objections or improvements to the chief editor within two weeks, with statement of the reasons for and against one or another mode of expression.
e) If all committee members have nothing essential to object to in the translation prepared by the editor, the latter shall at once arrange for a trial printing of the translation and send a copy to all pastors of the Synodical Conference.
f) If, however, protest against an immediate trial printing of the translation should be raised, even if only by a single member of the committee, then the appointed executive committee of the committee shall meet, and only after the unanimous judgment of this executive committee shall a trial printing be arranged.
g) All criticisms that come in on the trial printing within a month shall be discussed by the appointed executive committee, or, if the chief editor considers it advisable, by the full committee, and every member of the Synodical Conference shall be free to take part personally in this discussion.
h) The translation approved after the greatest possible agreement of the committee members shall count as the officially received translation of the Synodical Conference and be urgently recommended to the individual synods within it for kind acceptance, in case they publish catechisms and explanations of the catechism.
6. Resolved, to publish a church periodical in the English language for the Negroes. Professor R. Bischoff was elected editor of this paper.
