der Ev.⸗Luth. Synodalkonferenz von Nordamerika. 1914. 61
92 Seelen
(Zunahme: 4), 50 Kommunizierende (Zunahme: 5), 12 Stimm⸗
fähige (Abnahme: 7), 30 Sonntagsſchüler und 38 Wochenſchüler. Bei⸗
träge: $219.12; davon ſind $196.49 an die Miſſionskaſſe geſchickt
worden.
farbige Einwohner.
wendigkeit.
10. District of Columbia.
dorthin gezogen.
April predigte Dir. Bakke im Hauſe
des Herrn G. V. Montgomery vor etwa 10 erwachſenen Zuhörern.
Paſtor Polzin predigt dort ſeither jeden zweiten Sonntag.
11. Maryland.
Baltimore. Von Waſhington aus hat Paſtor Polzin im Mai
auch Baltimore beſucht und exploriert. Er war dreimal dort. Es
wohnen dort 84,479 Neger.

of the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1914. 61
A chapel is an urgent necessity. Our room, a wretched Negro log cabin, is too small, and another is not to be had. A building lot would probably cost 300 dollars and a simple chapel 500 dollars.
9. Virginia.
Meherrin, St. Matthew's. Missionary: Emil H. Polzin. This old country congregation has suffered from removals for years. Mission material is as good as nonexistent. Yet the number of souls has grown in the two years reported. 92 souls (increase: 4), 50 communicants (increase: 5), 12 voting members (decrease: 7), 30 Sunday-school pupils and 38 weekday-school pupils. Contributions: $219.12; of this $196.49 was sent to the mission treasury. Pastor Polzin has been instructed to move to Richmond in August and to serve Meherrin henceforth as a branch. The distance between the two places is 65 miles. A woman teacher must therefore be appointed in the school in the autumn. The property in Bruceville was sold in March 1913 for $115.
Richmond, the capital of the state of Virginia, has 46,733 colored inhabitants. A mission school is to be started there this autumn. The school is to be kept by the young candidate for the ministry Wilfred Tervalon, who passed his examination at Immanuel College this year, and he is also to help Pastor Polzin out with preaching as circumstances require. A chapel is a necessity in Richmond too.
10. District of Columbia.
Washington, the capital of our country, has a larger colored population than any other city in the United States, namely 94,446. Some members of our congregations have moved there. On the occasion of a German and an English pastoral conference, both of which met in Washington this spring, Dir. Bakke and Pastor Polzin traveled to Washington and looked around there. On April 23 Dir. Bakke preached in the house of Mr. G. V. Montgomery to about 10 adult hearers. Pastor Polzin has preached there every second Sunday since.
11. Maryland.
Baltimore. From Washington Pastor Polzin visited and explored Baltimore also in May. He was there three times. 84,479 Negroes live there.
