„(Herr Präſes Gauſewitz an Herrn Prof. Dau.)
„‚Milwaukee, den 1. Mai 1913.
„‚Lieber Herr Profeſſor!
„‚Dieſes Schreiben erhielt ich vor einigen Wochen. Es wurde,
wie das Datum zeigt, ſchon im Januar beſchloſſen. Weiß nicht recht,
was ich mit demſelben anfangen ſoll, und ſtelle es Ihnen als dem
Vorſitzer des Komitees der Delegaten an die Norwegiſche Synode zu.
Herzlich grüßend,
„‚Ihr

Präſes Gauſewitz.)
“ ‘Colton, S. Dak. (nicht datiert).
“ ‘To the Rt. Rev. C. Gausewitz,

“ ‘Milwaukee, Wis.
“ ‘Reverend and esteemed Praeses: —
“ ‘Your fraternal communication to the Synod of the Norwegian
Ev. Lutheran Church of America has by the Praeses of our Synod,
Dr. H. G. Stub, been submitted to the Church Council, which has
given it due and conscientious consideration.
“ ‘We fully recognize that the communication is dictated by, and
expressive of, brotherly love, and that the Synodical Conference
deemed it a duty of brotherly love to offer warning and guidance
to our Synod in the manner proposed in your letter, and at a time
when, in the opinion of the venerable fathers and brothers of the
Synodical Conference, our Synod seemed in special need thereof.
“ ‘But while recognizing all this, we are, nevertheless, of the firm
conviction that, regardless of whether the grievances against our
Synod in regard to our relation to the union movement be just or
unjust, the proposed method of procedure, namely, to send a dele-
gation to our synodical meetings to take up the matter for dis-
cussion at the same, would prove very unfortunate, and result in new
complications, and, instead of benefiting, would do harm to the
fraternal relation which it is your desire, as well as ours, to maintain.
“ ‘Any lengthy substantiation of this statement we deem un-
necessary. We need but mention that the time required for a
thorough discussion of the points brought forth in your writing
could not possibly be obtained at a synodical meeting. Besides, the
great majority of both pastors and delegates would, without doubt,

Norwegian Synod and to present orally the brotherly objections of the Reverend *Synodalkonferenz* [Synodical Conference] to the 'Opgjör'. The reason appears from the following correspondence:

"'Dear Professor!
"'I received this letter a few weeks ago. As the date shows, it was already resolved in January. I do not quite know what to do with it, and I am passing it on to you as chairman of the committee of delegates to the Norwegian Synod.
With hearty greetings,
