sary to execute it, or that it is impossible of execution.

“ ‘Prof. Schaller has not been mentioned in our letter for the
reason that Dr. Pieper and myself, in accepting your invitation,
wished to act entirely as private persons. As regards the powers of
our committee, we know that Prof. Schaller occupies the same position
as we, and as to Prof. Schaller’s willingness to meet with you in
private conference, we are under the impression that Prof. Schaller
has expressed his willingness to you to meet you privately some time
ago, even before the meeting of your Church Council in January.

“ ‘In what was written to you by Dr. Pieper and myself the
committee appointed by the Synodical Conference to visit the con-
vention of the Norwegian Synod is in no way implicated. We have
spoken absolutely for ourselves alone, and if we were to meet with the
committee appointed by your Church Council, there would not be
present at such a meeting two-thirds of the committee of the Synodical
Conference, or the entire committee, in case Prof. Schaller were to
attend also, but merely two or three private persons. In the sense
in which Dr. Pieper and myself have accepted the proposed meeting
with a committee appointed by your Church Council, the meeting,
whenever it takes place, would indeed be, as you say, “a private
affair,” without any official signification whatsoever. As there is not
in the Synodical Conference, like in your Synod, a standing authority
empowered to act for the Synodical Conference in the interim be-
tween two conventions, we are bound to adhere strictly to the in-
structions given to our committee at the last convention of the
Synodical Conference.

“Since then the Reverend Ev. Luth. Norwegian Synod has held an extra convention in June 1913 at Minneapolis. At this convention the letter of the Reverend *Synodalkonferenz* [Synodical Conference] was read (see pages 37–39 of its printed report), and the Church Council communicated to the Synod the proposal made to us, to negotiate the objections of the Reverend Synodical Conference to the Norwegian "Opgjör" with a committee appointed by the Church Council. The Reverend Norwegian Synod thereupon adopted the following resolutions:

"'D. Committee report concerning the letter of the Synodical Conference to the Synod.

"'1. The Synod acknowledges that the Church Council, which represents the Synod in the interim between two conventions of the Synod, was right to have the communication of the Synodical Conference
