der Ev.⸗Luth. Synodalkonferenz von Nordamerika. 1914. 37

moved, reverend fathers and brethren, by an examination of the
“Opgjoer,” to request you cordially and urgently to heed the three
exceptions to the “Opgjoer” which are herewith submitted, to the
end that both on your side and on ours the sole and pure truth
of the divine Word and the Lutheran Confessions may be confessed
in firm, clear, and definite terms, and maintained and defended against
all error, in order that consciences which are bound by God’s Word
and the Lutheran Confessions may be set at rest, and in order that
the unity of faith existing among us may be preserved.

“ ‘Accordingly, we pray your venerable Synod, for the sake of
our Confessions,

“ ‘a) To eliminate from Theses 1—3 of the “Opgjoer” the co-
ordination of the so-called first and second forms of doctrine, because
only the first form represents the truth of the Scriptures and of the
Confessions, while the second form is not founded in God’s Word and
the confessional writings of the Lutheran Church, and hence is not
entitled to such recognition in the Church.

“ ‘b) Inasmuch as the present state of affairs in our American
Lutheran Church demands a proper antithesis to synergistic doctrine,
we pray you to take steps to bring about a rejection of the teaching
that man’s conduct, in particular, his omission of the so-called willful
resistance, either by his natural powers or by powers conferred by
divine grace, is the reason by which we may explain why some are
converted and elected rather than others, as our opponents in the
American Lutheran Church teach.

“ ‘c) We pray you to enter into a fraternal discussion with us,
according to the Scriptures and Confessions and in the spirit of
truth and love, of your former theses on the Call and Conversion and
your present theses on Election.

“ ‘We ask and pray God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the great and only Lord of the Church, that He may grant that
this fraternal letter which was demanded of us by our sense of duty
and our conscience may find a willing ear in your venerable Synod,
and that He may direct this entire affair so as to make it redound
to the glory of His name and the salvation of many souls. We have,
moreover, elected three delegates who are to present orally what we
have stated in those presents.

“ ‘In the name and by the order of the Evangelical Lutheran
Synodical Conference of America,

“ ‘(Signed.) C. GAUSEWITZ, President.
“ ‘JOHN MEYER, Secretary.
“ ‘Saginaw, Mich., August 19, 1912.’
