rin, Va., an welcher P. D. Schooff ſeit zehn Jahren in großem Segen
wirkt.

50 Proceedings of the eighteenth convention

[consecrated]. Salisbury, where a chapel has been built, which Pastor A. Frey's congregation in Brooklyn, N. Y., has adorned with a splendid bell, is served by Pastor G. Schütz together with the other station, Catawba near Conover. There a chapel is under construction. Dry's School House, likewise a new station, will probably dedicate its chapel also in these days. The country stations Gold Hill, Rockwell and Mount Pleasant now stand for the first time under a pastorate of their own and are very happy and thankful for it. Now their children too can receive the necessary Christian school instruction. Pastor P. C. Engelbert has served these stations for a year and has already won the trust and love of these Negroes in a high degree.

From North Carolina we visit the eastern station Meherrin, Va., where Pastor D. Schooff has worked for ten years with great blessing. Besides Meherrin he has another station in Prince Edward County. In both places he keeps school and proclaims the Word, as he writes, on Sundays before 8 to 110 hearers. In the last two years he has confirmed 5 children and 16 adults; baptized 31 children and 7 adults, solemnized 2 marriages and given Christian burial to 8 persons, among them two great evildoers, father and son, who on the deathbed still converted honestly and so could be brought to the heavenly harvest. Pastor Schooff complains of the unmanageable work and asks for an assistant. The field is white and ripe for harvest!

Finally we have yet a spiritual field of grain in Springfield, Ill. Here Prof. Herzer, with great love and self-denial, alongside his heavy office, has again faithfully served our mission these two years. In the school our colored teacher McDavitt works under his supervision with faithfulness and skill. Professors and students of the practical seminary stand at his side in preaching. Baptized by him were 16, among them 5 adults, confirmed 8, of them 3 adults, 2 couples were married in the Christian manner, 5 persons buried. Among the students of the practical seminary in Springfield there are two Negro students, who are already in the second class and from now on can help Prof. Herzer especially with preaching. Both are sent by Pastor Joh. C. Schmidt from North Carolina and combine with rich gifts uncommon diligence. They are among the best students of their class. Prof. Herzer is of the opinion that this mission should receive a capable missionary and should stand as a model mission before the eyes of the theological seminary. —

A very praiseworthy and blessed arrangement our missionaries in North Carolina have made through the founding of their "Immanuel-Conferenz" [Immanuel Conference]. In it they seek not only to further themselves in wholesome knowledge of the pure doctrine and right Lutheran practice, but they also invite the congregation to it and let lay delegates take part in the deliberations [continued on the next page]
