der Ev.⸗Luth. Synodalkonferenz von Nordamerika. 1928. 35
Mein Gott, in allen Gnaden hin!
Im Himmel ſoll es beſſer werden,
Wenn ich bei deinen Engeln bin.
Da ſing' ich dir im höhern Chor
Viel tauſend Halleluja vor.
Amen.

that he too himself was tempted and thus knows and understands our need well.
It says in chapter 2:18: "For in that he himself hath suffered being tempted,
he is able to succour them that are tempted." And again, chapter 4:15: "For we
have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our
infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin."
And that Jesus now also really helps, we see from many passages. It lies in the
words where he is described as faithful High Priest over the house of God, that
is, over the Christian church. It lies in the beautiful saying in which the hope
directed to Christ, the High Priest, is described as a sure and steadfast anchor
of our soul, which also reaches into that within the veil, that is, into
heaven, chapter 6:19. It lies in the saying in chapter 10:23: "Let us hold fast
the profession of our faith without wavering; for he is faithful that
promised." To him let us therefore look, my brethren, as to our High Priest,
who has compassion on us and gives us strength in all temptations.
With this pointer to the great, comforting truth that Jesus even now is still
active for us as our High Priest, we want to bring our discussions of our
subject to a close. If anywhere, we notice it here, how little our human ability
is able to praise the Redeemer and his work as it deserves. Our knowing is in
part, and our prophesying is in part, that holds here too. Neither can we
measure with our understanding the height and the depth of the sacrifice of
Jesus Christ, nor can we speak, testify and sing of it as we should and as we
would gladly like to. But we have the joyful hope that it will one day be
different. Concerning this very matter too, we look up to Jesus and say:
Ah, take the poor praise on earth,
My God, in all grace!
In heaven it shall be better,
When I am with thy angels.
There I will sing to thee in the higher choir
Many thousand hallelujahs.
Amen.
