62 Verhandlungen der einunddreißigſten Verſammlung
Vacancy in the Missionary Board.
For some time there has been a vacancy in the Missionary Board.
The Board repeatedly debated the question as to whether the one to
be elected to fill this vacancy should be a clergyman or a layman.
It is argued that he should be a clergyman, so that he could be
groomed for the secretaryship of the Board. It is also argued, and
very pertinently, that he should be a layman, so that there would be
at least two laymen on the Board. It would be possible to get both,
a pastor and a layman, if a certain regulation of the Synodical Con-
ference were altered. The regulations adopted by the Synodical Con-
ference in 1912 relating to the office of the Field Secretary (Missions-
direktor) read, in part, in paragraph 11: “He shall be a member of
the Board,” etc. We, therefore, recommend to the Synodical Con-
ference the following: —
Resolved, That we amend that part of paragraph 11 of the
regulations for field secretary adopted in 1912 which reads: “He shall
be a member of the Board,” etc., so that it will read: “He shall be
ex officio an advisory member of the Board.”
Adopted.
Charter Committee.
WHEREAS, The present Articles of Association of “The Mission-
ary Board of the Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of
North America for Missions among the Heathen and the Negroes,”
hereinafter called the “Missionary Board,” are deficient and objec-
tionable and do not give the said Missionary Board the legal protec-
tion which it should have; and
WHEREAS, The present corporate title of the said Missionary
Board is so long that it is frequently written incorrectly by those
not fully acquainted with it, leading to confusion that may prove
embarrassing and detrimental to the interests of the said Missionary
Board; therefore be it
Resolved, That we appoint a Charter Committee, consisting of
three members of the Synodical Conference; and be it further
Resolved, That Mr. George Eigel, of St. Louis, Mo., Mr. Ernest
Von Briesen, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Mr. Karl Zollmann, of Mil-
waukee, Wis., constitute the said Charter Committee; and be it
further
Resolved, That the said Charter Committee draft amended
Articles of Association for the said Missionary Board and submit
its findings to the Board of Trustees of the Synodical Conference;
and be it further
Resolved, That the said Board of Trustees review the findings
of the said Charter Committee and make such further amendments
to the said Articles of Association as may appear expedient; and
be it finally
Resolved, That we authorize and instruct our Board of Trustees,
and it is hereby authorized and instructed, to take such legal steps
as may be necessary to secure an amended charter for the said Mis-
sionary Board on the basis of the said amended Articles of As-
sociation.
On motion of Rev. D. Poellot, which was seconded by Rev. H.
Daib, this resolution was adopted.
