of the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1930. 39

who introduce something new, especially when they apply human philosophy and subtlety. The guilt for the division in the Church is borne solely and alone by those who bring up and defend the false doctrine, not by those who refuse to approve such a position. If a teacher or a fellowship has indeed loaded this guilt upon itself, he, or it, should penitently put away the wrong and not seek to shift it onto others.

We conclude with the words of our Confession (Apology, Art. XXVIII; *Conc. Trigl.*, 450): "Thus the devil, with his members who set themselves against God's Word, is the cause of the division and disunity; for we have sought the highest peace, which we still desire in the highest degree, so far as we are not compelled to blaspheme and deny Christ. For God knows, who is the judge of all hearts, that we take no pleasure or joy in this dreadful disunity. . . . And although it is not to be denied that, as the world is wont, offenses have nevertheless occurred in this division through wanton and unskilful people — for the devil raises up such offenses to the disgrace of the Gospel — yet they are all not to be regarded against the great comfort that this doctrine has brought with it, which teaches that for Christ's sake, without our merit, we have forgiveness of sins and a gracious God; likewise, that it instructs that divine service does not consist in forsaking worldly estates and authority, but that such estates and authority please God and are right, holy works and divine services."

[Verse:]
Grant peace to church and schools, we pray thee,
Grant peace as well to civil order,
Peace to the heart, peace to the conscience,
Give us to enjoy!

SOLI DEO GLORIA! [To God alone the glory!]
