J. N. J. [In the Name of Jesus.]

The Evangelical Lutheran Synodical Conference of North America held its thirty-second convention from the 6th to the 11th of August 1930 at Quincy, Ill.

The opening service, at which Pastor Herm. Gieschen preached the sermon on Ps. 84:4, took place on Wednesday morning in St. John's Church (Pastor C. A. Weiß). The further sessions were held in St. James's Church (Pastor Titus Lang).

On Sunday the Conference took part in the celebration of the four-hundredth anniversary of the Augsburg Confession arranged by the Lutheran congregations of Quincy. In the forenoon of the festival Pastor W. E. Hohenstein preached in St. James's Church on Ps. 20:5, and Pastor John Alston delivered an address. In the afternoon, in South Park in Quincy, Prof. J. H. C. Fritz delivered the festival sermon on Acts 5:27-42, and Pastor M. N. Carter delivered an address. On Friday evening Pastor Carter gave a lantern-slide lecture on one field of the *Negermission* [Negro Mission, the period's term for the mission among African Americans].

There were four forenoon sessions, each from 9:30 to 12 o'clock, and three afternoon sessions, each from 2:30 to 5 o'clock. By resolution of the Conference the time, both of the forenoon and of the afternoon sessions, was divided by the chairman between doctrinal and business proceedings. The doctrinal proceedings were led by Dr. P. E. Kretzmann on "True Union as Opposed to Unionism and Separatism." Pastors R. C. Avé-Lallemant and Pastor Eickstädt served as chaplains.

After the names of the accredited delegates had been read at the beginning of the Wednesday afternoon session, the chairman, Dr. L. Fürbringer, declared the convention organized. There were 96 delegates present. The convention lasted until shortly before noon on the following Monday.
