52 Proceedings of the thirty-second convention

Savior has blessed us despite all the shortcomings of the school and all the
infirmities and faults of teachers and pupils, and we thank him for it."

Property: teaching building, schoolhouse, residence for girls, three
professors' residences, 13½ acres of land.

2. Alabama Luther College in Selma, Ala. This institution, a high school, was
founded in 1922. Director: Prof. Otho Lynn, since 1922. The professors are all
Negroes. All the pupils are members of our church. They come from Alabama,
Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana and Wisconsin. The conduct of the pupils
was good; however, one girl had to be dismissed, and three boys were suspended
for a year.

Needs: residence for boys; two classrooms; a library with reading room;
laboratory equipment; equipment for domestic science; equipment for
kindergarten.

At its plenary meeting in April 1930 the mission board resolved to add one year
to the course for the better training of future women teachers. The Honorable
Synodical Conference is asked to approve this.

Property: teaching building with auditorium, in which the Trinity congregation
holds its services; residence for girls; thirteen acres of land.

3. Luther Preparatory School in New Orleans. Founded 1929. Director: Prof.
Paul Scherf, since January 1930. Two years ago the Honorable Synodical
Conference resolved to reopen the Luther College in New Orleans, which was
closed in 1925, for those boys and girls who wish to be trained for mission
service. There was too little time to open the institution in the same year;
so the opening had to be postponed for a year. Since no director had yet been
found, the pastors Lücke of the Mount Zion congregation and Wildgrube of the
St. Paul's congregation declared themselves ready to take over the instruction
and the leadership temporarily. On September 16, 1929, the institution was
opened with 30 pupils. They are all members of our church. Instruction was
given in the 8th and 9th grades. On January 1, 1930, P. Paul Scherf was
installed as professor and director of the institution. The two pastors named
helped out until the end of the school year on June 6. Sincere thanks are due
them for their faithful and good work.

The conduct of the pupils was good on the whole. One boy had to be dismissed.
-- At its plenary meeting in April 1930 the Mission Commission resolved to add
the tenth grade. Director Scherf urgently asks for new buildings.

New Buildings.

Chapels.

1. Ackerville, Wilcox Co., Ala. In December 1929 a chapel-school was dedicated
here, a gift of the women's societies in Lincoln and Marathon Counties in
Wisconsin, who collected and sent in $1,000.

2. Catherine, Wilcox Co., Ala. The chapel-school there is a gift of Mrs. J.
Firzlaff and her sister, Mrs. A. Heinecke, both residents of Sheboygan, Wis.
These two friends of the mission used an inheritance received from their uncle
and aunt to have a memorial chapel erected. The building is called The Dr. and
Mrs. J. E. Elfers Memorial Chapel. The dedication took place on January 12,
1930.
