Deshalb empfiehlt

48 Proceedings of the fourteenth convention

Heathen Mission.

The honorable Synod of Wisconsin, through its committee for heathen mission, has addressed a petition to the honorable Synodical Conference [*Synodalconferenz*] to take energetic steps so that the Heathen Mission may be undertaken as soon as possible.

The undersigned committee permits itself to lay the following before the honorable Synodical Conference for deliberation and resolution:

1. It is beyond doubt that the Synodical Conference, as the largest Lutheran church body of this country, should no longer withdraw from its holy obligation, in accordance with the command of Christ, to finally undertake also real heathen mission.

2. The committee is convinced, however, from the experiences so far with the Negro Mission, that it is better for one synod to begin and conduct the heathen mission as its own, with the support of the synods connected with it, than for it to be carried on as a joint work of the whole Synodical Conference. The direction and care of the mission is easier and simpler, and the interest and participation of the synodical congregations can be awakened more easily and better for their own mission than for a general one.

3. Since the committee of the honorable Synod of Wisconsin has already gathered important and reliable information about Indian reservations, and there are among them very favorable mission fields, the honorable Synodical Conference encourages the said synod to begin the Indian mission at once and urgently calls upon the connected synods to support it in this.

4. Heathen mission shall not impair the work of the Negro Mission, but here too the word shall hold: This one should do, and not leave the other undone. The Negro Mission also, as a joint work of the Synodical Conference, shall continue to be supported most vigorously by all its synods as before.

C. J. Otto Hanser. G. Ph. Brenner.
Wilh. Dallmann. C. J. Albrecht.
John Wegner.

After a longer discussion of this report, the following was adopted as the expression of opinion of the Synodical Conference: All Christians, and every individual Christian, have the duty to carry on mission. Therefore the Synodical Conference is of the opinion that it is now time to establish a heathen mission and, in accordance with the words of Christ, "Preach the Gospel to every creature," to bring His pure Word to the heathen. It therefore recommends to all the synods connected with it that they take up this subject seriously in deliberation and report on it at the next meeting of the Synodical Conference.

With this the entire report submitted by the committee was disposed of.
