der ev.⸗luth. Synodalconferenz von Nord⸗Amerika. 1888. 45
wohnen und ihnen das Reiſegeld aus der Miſſionskaſſe gereicht werde;
So

of the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1888. 45
cannot at any price be brought again into the seminary for services, for they fear the "German sickness," as they call that nervous fever; the schoolhouse is wholly inadequate for the services and is also not to be had any longer, another suitable place is not to be found in the whole neighborhood; so we are left hardly any other choice than either to let the mission at Springfield drop, or to build. In this case also the Rev. Synodical Conference will have to decide.
V. General Matters.
The Commission held in the two years now past 13 regular meetings, whose proceedings are exactly recorded, and several shorter consultations. The missionaries have regularly sent in their quarterly reports on the state of the congregations, attendance at the services and schools, on their official acts, and income and expenditure for the mission, so that the Commission was exactly informed about everything and remained in constant communication with the missionaries. The mission in New Orleans was visited each year at the Commission's request by Pastor H. C. Schwan, Rev. General President [*Präſes*] of the Missouri Synod, on the occasion of its Southern District Synod; the mission in Little Rock was visited by Pastor Janzow of St. Louis, the mission in Meherrin by Pastor Oehlschläger in Richmond, Va., and the mission in Springfield by the undersigned.
The Commission considered it fair and advantageous that our missionaries also attend the meetings of their respective district synods and that their travel money be paid from the mission treasury; they should, however, seek the consent of the Commission for it. So it has also been done thus far. It might be beneficial to our mission if all our mission workers in addition held an annual conference, to encourage, strengthen and better equip themselves for their difficult work. A member of the Commission should also attend each time. The principal subjects to be discussed should be determined beforehand and papers on them prepared. But such conferences have not yet been introduced. Meanwhile many questions that moved our missionaries have been laid before the Commission for its opinion.
The wish to make it possible for the synods belonging to the Rev. Synodical Conference and for the district synods to make the Negro Mission a subject of discussion at their annual meetings has also this time been met, in that the Commission sent the Rev. Presidents in good time a short report on the state of the mission.
