Die neuteſtamentlichen Titel der Chriſten.
(Referent: P. W. Dallmann.)
Titel.
„So ziehet
nun an herzliches Erbarmen“ ꝛc., V. 12—17.
entehrende Arbeit. Im Gegenteil, ſelbſt der geringſte Dienſt, die

The New Testament Titles of Christians.
(Essayist: Pastor W. Dallmann.)
Just as the titles that the Savior gives himself are not only
interesting but also instructive and practical, so also are the titles
that he gives to his Christians. They are short, but pregnant with meaning. For
Christians they are not empty, meaningless distinctions that would be bestowed on them
only honoris causa, as it were. They are practical
titles. They describe the essence of Christians. They make the Christian
what they say. And Christians, so gloriously favored by God,
are to prove by their works that the titles are fitting.
Col. 3:12–4:2 may show what these titles of Christians
amount to. "You are God's elect, holy and
beloved." High honor is heaped upon Christians with these words, and they are showered with rich grace. The hymns of praise of the
blessed before the throne of God will never be able to
give thanks enough for such unspeakable mercy. How then should
gratitude for such a great benefit drive Christians here on earth
to live in keeping with these glorious titles! "Put on, then,
tender mercy," etc., vv. 12–17.
So rich is the grace conveyed by these titles that the Apostle
is not content to exhort to gratitude in general terms;
he also shows how each person, in his particular station,
is to live worthily of this honor, vv. 18–22; 4:1. He addresses to wives
and husbands, children and fathers, servants and masters, in each case an exhortation suited
especially to their station.
Such service of Christians is also not, as it might appear
and as the world holds, degrading, a
dishonorable labor. On the contrary, even the humblest service, the
