Offenes Sendſchreiben an
Se.

The Synodical Conference [*Synodalconferenz*] joined at once in these wishes, which are also cherished elsewhere in wide circles, and unanimously gave the following declarations:

1. "We regard the composition of a doctrinal work [*Glaubenslehre*] in the spirit of the old orthodox dogmaticians, but with consideration of the newer theology, as something exceedingly desirable, indeed highly necessary.

2. We regard Professor Walther, both through his special gifts and through his whole position, as called to this before others.

3. We therefore hereby express the earnest request that Professor Walther take the work in hand in God's name, when and as soon as his other necessary labors permit it.

4. We leave it to him whether this work too, as once the Pastoral Theology, could not be published first in sections, but continuously, in 'Lehre und Wehre'."

VII. Examination of the Synodical Reports of the Synods Belonging to the Conference.

According to last year's resolution (cf. Report of the Conference of the year 1876, p. 54: "Doctrinal Watch on the Part of the Synodical Conference" [*Lehrwache*]) President Preus had ordered a careful examination of all synodical reports of the past year from the circle of the synods belonging to the Conference and had submitted the detailed written minutes on this to the Conference. The latter handed these minutes once more to a committee for a brief report, which was also made in the following wording and was adopted by the Conference:

"The minutes named were examined and found correct. Only in one of them was something offensive found in the doctrinal proceedings. But since the synod concerned has already resolved to reconsider the matter and to do away with what is incorrect, the committee believes it should not go further into it. One protocol was missing."

VIII. "The Culturjunker".

A pamphlet had been sent to the Conference, titled: "Die Culturjunker, or the present crisis of state and church in the German Empire. Open letter to His Majesty, the German Emperor, and an open word to the people of the Reformation from the Lutheran Church in North America." The author of this writing called upon the Synodical Conference to sign it, or rather also to profess it as its own. The committee entrusted with examining this writing needed only to read out to the Conference a number of sentences from it to convince the Conference sufficiently that it could never make this address its own. Therefore the following declaration was unanimously given:
