der Ev.⸗Luth. Synodalkonferenz von Nordamerika. 1912. 37

1. Das Immanuel Lutheran College in Greensboro, N. C.
— Die Fakultät beſteht aus Direktor F. Berg und den Profeſſoren
M. Lochner, J. Ph. Schmidt und Fr. Wahlers. Nachdem Direktor N. J.
Clinton says that it is one of the best schools he has ever visited."
Auch Booker Waſhington hat ſich lobend ausgeſprochen. Die Neger er⸗
klären: "I send my boy or girl to you, because you make Christians
of them."

2. Das Luther College in New Orleans.
Der Be⸗

of the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1912. 37

Educational Institutions.

There are in our country about 40 colleges and universities, which are attended by some 30,000 young Negroes. Among these are our two institutions as well.

1. The Immanuel Lutheran College in Greensboro, N. C. — The faculty consists of Director F. Berg and the Professors M. Lochner, J. Ph. Schmidt and Fr. Wahlers. After Director N. J. Bakke accepted the call as Mission Director, Pastor F. Berg of Beardstown, Ill., was chosen as his successor and was installed on September 6, 1911. In the school year 1910/11 the institution had 105 pupils, in the school year 1911/12 64. The decrease is probably due mainly to the fact that last summer a great drought prevailed in the state of North Carolina, and that, furthermore, a change took place in the directorship. Although the number of pupils has decreased, the assistant teacher granted by the Honorable Synodical Conference [*Synodalkonferenz*] was nevertheless appointed, in order to give the new director time and opportunity to settle into the new, unfamiliar work. The assistant teacher has now also been dismissed because, through the call of Otho Lynn, the professors have been relieved of serving the stations Greensboro, High Point and Elon College. The prospects for the coming school year are good. Our institution has a good reputation. In the school year 1910/11 the Booker T. Washington Party, consisting of the most distinguished men among the Negroes, visited the institution. The members were full of praise. One wrote: "Bishop Clinton says that it is one of the best schools he has ever visited." Booker Washington also expressed himself in praise. The Negroes declare: "I send my boy or girl to you, because you make Christians of them." The recommendation made two years ago, "that the commission be authorized to install central heating in the school building if there is good prospect that the necessary funds will come in," could not be carried out so far for lack of money. In addition to this central heating, two professors' residences are now requested, which would cost $2036.00 each. Director Berg is ready to explain and justify this request. For the drain, $892.00 has already been spent. If it were to be connected with the city sewerage system, that would cost a further $600.00. We have been advised to wait with this for the time being. The prospects are namely good that a streetcar line will be built out to the college. If this happens, Fair Grounds will be set up nearby; the city sewerage system and the desired water main would then be extended to the neighborhood of our institution.

2. The Luther College in New Orleans. — According to the resolution of the last Synodical Conference, Luther College is now a preparatory school for Immanuel College in Greensboro. The resolution that the position of director at Luther College be filled again
