riſchen Theologie zu widmen gedenken, das Gymnaſium benutzen;

3. That the institution shall remain what it presently is, namely a
gymnasium in the sciences preparatory to the study of theology, and for
the training of teachers for higher and lower schools, in conjunction with
a theological seminary, in which students devoting themselves to
academic theology receive their final training.
Young people who do not intend to devote themselves to Lutheran
theology may, however, also make use of the gymnasium; but the
bequests and donations set aside for the institution shall benefit
exclusively those students who are preparing for service in the Lutheran
Church, and outside students [Extraner] attending the gymnasium in
preparation for some other calling in life shall be excluded from sharing
in the said bequests.
Should outside means permit, and other circumstances arise in future
which lead the Synod to consider it expedient, and conducive to the
institution's flourishing, to extend it also to other university disciplines
[Facultätswissenschaften], this may indeed be done; but in doing so the
institution's present purpose shall always be kept in view as the chief
purpose and shall in no way be prejudiced or otherwise suffer harm, but
rather all the property of the Lutheran theological institution shall
remain its own and be applied only to its benefit.
§ 3. The Synod shall appoint from among its own members a board of
oversight [Aufsichtsbehörde], consisting of the members of the
examination committee [Prüfungs-Commission], unless one or more of
these belong to the teaching staff. In the latter case it shall fill out its
number, by regular election, with other academically trained pastors of
its fellowship. — As a fourth member of the board of oversight, the Synod
shall elect a suitable person from among the hearers [students/laity], if
possible from the members of the German Evangelical Lutheran
congregation of the unaltered Augsburg Confession at St. Louis, Mo.
§ 4. The Synod appoints the members of the board of oversight, and
their legal successors, as Trustees.
§ 5. The board of oversight is to exercise oversight over the following:
1. Whether the religious instruction given in the gymnasium, and the
doctrine taught in the seminary, conform to the Word of God according to
the sense of our Church's symbolical writings (the Book of Concord of
1580).
2. Whether the teachers faithfully discharge their office and adorn it
with a godly walk of life.
3. Whether matters concerning the seminary's finances are
conscientiously administered.
§ 6. The board of oversight, together with the teaching staff, shall each
year draw up a curriculum [Lectionsplan] for the gymnasium and one for
the seminary, according to which latter the seminarians are, by means of
a three-year course, given the opportunity to reach the standard set for
first-class candidates for the preaching office in the Synodical
Constitution, Chap. V, § 10.
§ 7. The direction of the seminary lies with the whole teaching staff, of
whom one teacher is given the chair and the deciding vote by the Synod.
As treasurer the Synod elects a member of the St. Louis congregation,
who must render an annual account to the board of oversight.
