a. Von der Gemeinde zu St. Louis ........................................$2035.75
b. Von den auswärtigen Gemeinden .......................................... 1557.72¾
Dazu c. aus der Synodalcaſſe ein Vorſchuß von.................................. 300.00
___________
Obhut derſelben zu überlaſſen“;

had appointed a commission to direct the construction — the latter
proceeded to carry out the Synod's resolutions. The commission
accordingly held five meetings from August 29 to November 11 of last
year, the result of which was the decision that a building be erected on
the said land according to a design drawn up by Mr. M. Stephan and
adopted with few modifications; and on Sept. 26 of this year a building
contract was concluded with Messrs. Christian König and Heinrich
Rohlfing, whereby, for the sum of $3649.11¼, they were to erect a brick
building 42' long, 36' wide, and, including the ground floor, three stories
high, with a porch attached to its rear. This building was to be brought
under roof before winter, and the builders were to be paid $2000.00 in
installments falling due up to April 1850. According to the minutes of
September 23, however, Messrs. König and Rohlfing dropped $49.11¼
from the estimated building cost, and in return were granted, in addition
to the previous claim of $3600, the sum of $657.62 for a cistern and the
outbuildings, as well as for a pump and the interior fitting-out of the
buildings, so that — including $8.56 expended for printed letters — the
college's total debt came to $4266.38, of which, however, $3573.17 had
already been paid off. The remainder of the debt was to be raised by
means of a collection in the city, outside the congregation, through
Messrs. Tschirpe and Pechmann.
According to the accounting presented to the Synod, the following
sums had come in, in cash, for the construction of the building:
a. From the congregation at St. Louis .............................$2035.75
b. From the congregations abroad [outlying congregations] .. 1557.72¾
Plus c. an advance from the synodical treasury of ................ 300.00
___________
so that the total income amounts to .............................$3893.47¾
The expenditure to date on the builders and on the interior
fitting-out amounts in all to ......................................$3882.13
___________
so that there remains a cash balance of ........................$ 11.34¾
Since, however, the whole building comes to $4266.58, and only
$3882.13 of that has so far been paid, and since the advance of $300.00
taken from the synodical treasury must also be repaid to it, the college
presently carries a debt of $684.45.
The Synod had also addressed an inquiry to the congregations at
Altenburg and St. Louis: whether they were willing to hand over the
direction and care of the gymnasium [Gymnasium] and theological
seminary located at Altenburg, Perry County, Mo., to the Synod.
Accordingly, the named congregations issued the following
Deed of Transfer
which reads:
"Whereas the Reverend German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of
Missouri, Ohio, and other States, in pursuance of the resolutions adopted
at the sessions held at Chicago in the year 1847, has addressed to the
undersigned congregations the inquiry:
'whether they were willing to hand over the direction and care of the
gymnasium and theological seminary located at Altenburg, Perry County,
Mo., to the same [the Synod]';
