Studium der Theologie vorbereitenden Wiſſenſchaften förmlich be⸗
Synode in diejenige

we hereby, in consequence of careful deliberation to that end and in
accordance with the resolutions we have adopted, transfer the said
college [Collegium] at Altenburg — insofar as it could or might until now
be regarded as our own foundation — to the Reverend German
Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other States, in due
and proper form, so that from this day forward it shall be the sole
property of this Synod, and the direction and administration of the
institution shall belong to it from now on.
In making this transfer, however, we set forth the following conditions,
in accordance with Chapters I and II of our synodical Constitution:
1. That it shall forever serve the Lutheran Church, and train only her
pastors and teachers.
2. That German shall be adopted, and remain inviolably, the sole
medium of instruction in the college [Collegio]. We stipulate, however,
that the use of the Latin language customary in the gymnasiums and
universities of Germany for certain lessons shall also be applied in the
seminary.
3. That the institution shall remain what it presently is, namely a
gymnasium [Gymnasium] in the sciences preparatory to the study of
theology, and for the training of teachers for higher and lower schools, in
conjunction with a theological seminary, in which students devoting
themselves to academic theology receive their final training.
Young people who do not intend to devote themselves to Lutheran
theology may, however, also make use of the gymnasium. But the
bequests and donations set aside for the institution shall benefit
exclusively those students who are preparing for service in the Lutheran
Church, and outside students [Extraner] attending the gymnasium in
preparation for some other calling in life shall be excluded from sharing
in the said bequests and donations.
Should outside means permit, and other circumstances arise in future
which lead the Reverend Synod to consider it expedient, and conducive to
the institution's flourishing, to extend it also to other university
disciplines [Facultäts-Wissenschaften], we do in advance consent to this,
but with the express reservation that in doing so the institution's present
purpose shall always be kept in view as the chief purpose and shall in no
way be prejudiced or otherwise suffer harm, but rather that all the
property of the Lutheran theological institution shall remain its own and
be applied only to its benefit.
4. Since the present Rector of the College, Mr. Candidate Jakob
Gönner, was formally called in the year 1843 as a teacher in our
institution, in the sciences preparatory to the study of theology, we
consider it our duty to add also this condition: that the Reverend Synod
step into our place in the obligation we undertook by the above call.
And although the present assistant teacher, Mr. Carl Julius Otto
Nitzschke, could in the year 1847, in view of our institution's meager
means of support, only be called on an interim basis, we cannot fail to
note here that the acceptance of this call on his part, under the
