der ev.⸗luth. Synodalconferenz von Nord⸗Amerika. 1890. 35
niſſen höchſt unangenehmer Art Veranlaſſung geben könnte, während an⸗
Miſſouri, Ohio u. a.

of the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1890. 35
The committee recommends the following answer: "To the inquiry in the general form in which it now stands, only a general and quite indefinite answer can be given, which, on the one hand, however carefully drafted, could give occasion for misunderstandings of a most unpleasant kind, while on the other hand it would throw only little light on concrete cases. Since it is evident that such concrete cases gave rise to the submission of the inquiry, the brethren who differ should be advised to submit the matter in question, privately, for review and counsel to a narrower circle of trusted men chosen by themselves."
The Synodical Conference [*Synodalconferenz*] declared that it had always declined to act as arbiter between congregations and synods, since this does not fall within its jurisdiction.
Petition of the Congregation at Belle Plaine, Scott Co., Minn.
The petition of the congregation named above to the Synodical Conference for financial assistance with its church building was declined, with reference to the rule and the practice hitherto followed by the Synodical Conference, and the secretary was instructed to advise the congregation to turn first to its own synod, and, if that should not suffice, to neighboring sister synods.
The Synodical Conference and the Modern School Laws in Wisconsin and Illinois.
On behalf of the united school committee of the Venerable Synod of Wisconsin and of the Wisconsin District of the Missouri Synod, Pastor J. Herzer presented the request:
1. "That the Venerable Synodical Conference be pleased to give a declaration of its position on the school question, or rather the school laws." Further, the question:
2. "Whether the Venerable Synodical Conference would be willing to appoint a special committee for this school matter, which could work together with the commission of the general body [*Allgemeine Synode*; Joint Synod] of Missouri, Ohio, and other States."
The answer of the Synodical Conference read: Although in our doctrinal discussions this year we also take up the new school laws (Bennett-Law) and our position on them, we nevertheless consider it advisable, indeed necessary, that we too, as a Synodical Conference, issue a declaration about them and profess agreement with the resolutions adopted in this regard by the Venerable Wisconsin and Missouri Synods, and that in both German and English.
