der ev.⸗luth. Synodalconferenz von Nord⸗Amerika. 1890. 29
Arbeitsfeld ſei in St. Louis, Mo.

of the Ev. Luth. Synodical Conference of North America. 1890. 29
What a blessing these children bring with them into the houses and families when they sing their Lutheran hymns, learn and recite aloud their catechism and Bible stories! How many a seed of the divine Word falls there into the hearts of the parents and other members of the household!
The most necessary needs of our hitherto so blessed Negro Mission (Negermission), if this blessing is not to be stunted again but is to increase further, are therefore the following:
1. A school of two classrooms for Bethlehem in New Orleans, for years already an urgent need, indispensable for the healthy development of the station. Of this Prof. Pieper also convinced himself on the spot on the occasion of his visitation, and therefore recommended the building most strongly. The cost would be about $1500.00.
2. A school of two classrooms for St. Paul in New Orleans, of which exactly the same holds.*)
3. A similar school or church for Mount Zion in the same place would be very desirable, if it were possible. Likewise repair and enlargement of the church in Meherrin.
4. The appointment of at least three more teachers in New Orleans. The Commission had asked the Distribution Committee of the Venerable Missouri Synod for three teachers, but because of a lack of candidates could get only one; and this one now refuses to follow the call because he fears he could not tolerate the climate in New Orleans. When he accepted the call he was under the impression that his field of work was in St. Louis, Mo.
5. The Commission saw itself compelled, in order to pay off the building debts incurred in Springfield and to be able to pay the mission workers their salaries, to take out a loan of about $2500.00, which sum has now been called in on it, and therefore ought to be repaid.
If the glorious mission work is to continue, indeed not to decline but only to be maintained at its present height, we must make still higher demands on the love of our dear Christians, and urgently exhort them for the sake of the love of Christ to remember our treasury more generously than was done in the last year, when we could not even cover our current expenses, as the treasurer's report shows.
6. But so that the most necessary buildings may soon be carried out and the borrowed money repaid, the Commission ventures to recommend to the Venerable Synodical Conference [*Synodalconferenz*] that it address to the Missouri Synod the urgent request to give it, for the carrying on of the Negro Mission, from its
*) Both proposals were raised by the convention unanimously to a resolution.
