Lehre und Wehre.
Jahrgang V. Juni 1859. No. 6.

On the Teaching of the Newest Theology Concerning the Person of Christ in the State of Humiliation.
As God is One, so also the truth that testifies of God and his working for our redemption is a single, unified truth. One cannot therefore injure and falsify it in one single point while leaving the other points untouched: rather, when error penetrates into one doctrine, the other doctrines are necessarily affected along with it, and indeed those most and most plainly which stand in the closest and most immediate connection with the one falsified. When a limb on the body is injured or becomes sick, the injury and sickness do not remain confined to that limb alone, but irresistibly press on into the nearest limbs, until even the center of bodily life, the heart, is seized, and the more dangerous it is, the more the whole body is drawn along into the suffering and the harm. So it is also with divine truth. If one member suffers, all the members suffer. But the true heart-point in the organism of Christian doctrine is the article of the Person of Christ. This is affected, directly or indirectly, by every harm that strikes any of the fundamental doctrines of our faith. It cannot remain pure and unadulterated where the doctrine of the Trinity, of the Lord's Supper, of justification, and the fundamental articles connected with them are falsified, even were it through an apparently ever so slight an error. And just as much must every deviation from revealed truth in the doctrine of the Person of Christ draw after it a falsification of the other doctrines, and indeed first and most plainly of those doctrines directly connected with it; just as, when the heart is sick or injured, the other members of the body too are at once seized along with it by the suffering and the harm. This doctrine is therefore of the highest importance. It is the point at which, in theological systems, the small and great deviations from the eternal rule of the Word of God come to light most strikingly, and at the same time in the full horror of their repugnance; and it is from this point, once error begins in it, that it spreads like a poisonous plague over
