Dec. v.

256 A Road to Rome.

the Church then armed itself with God’s Word, just as surely does it offer its children today that same armor for victory in the present day.

Is it not as though Pope Pius IX wished to become the apologist of our confession? For since the Reformation, no papal act has revealed the antichristian principle of the papacy more openly than the one carried out in Rome on December 8 of last year. What Sixtus IV in 1483 and Alexander VII in 1661 did not yet consider timely, Pius IX considered timely in 1854—tandem est a Romana ecclesia et apostolica sede decisum! Oh, how powerless the true, genuinely apostolic Church must have become in the world for the Pope now to dare to come forward with his formulation of dogma! His wound has healed.

A Road to Rome.

Among the standard-bearers of the free-congregation movement of the Friends of Light, the preacher Giese was, as is well known, in his day one of the foremost alongside Uhlich and Wislicenus. He had joined the “believers,” although, as he himself related, he had borne his faith only reluctantly, amid the constant resistance of his inner man, as a yoke. Therefore, after casting off this yoke, he called himself one who had “become free.” Unfortunately for him, he was also a poet. A poem inspired by the freedom he had attained brought him to the fortress in Magdeburg. During this imprisonment he converted again and once more took up the discarded yoke of faith. After serving his term of imprisonment, nothing more was heard of him; according to public newspapers, however, he spent two years at the Rauhes Haus near Hamburg and has now become Catholic in Münster. Thus he will be able to judge freedom and imprisonment from his own experience.
