Dr. Hengstenbergs Stellung zu den Fragen von Amt und Kirchenregiment. 165
87. Arma ecclesiae preces et lacrimae.
Der Kirche Waffen sind Gebet und Thränen.
88. Ecclesia non sitit sanguinem.
Die Kirche dürstet nicht nach Blut.
89. Sanguine fundata est ecclesia, sanguine coepit,
Sanguine succrevit, sanguine finis erit.

Dr. Hengstenberg's Position on the Questions of Ministry and Church Government. 165
(Brentius.)
The state is not in the church, but the church is in the state.
87. Arma ecclesiae preces et lacrimae.
The church's weapons are prayer and tears.
88. Ecclesia non sitit sanguinem.
The church does not thirst for blood.
89. Sanguine fundata est ecclesia, sanguine coepit,
Sanguine succrevit, sanguine finis erit.
Through blood the church was founded, with the shedding of blood it began, through blood it grew, with the shedding of blood it will end.
90. Veritas premitur, non opprimitur.
The truth is pressed down, not suppressed.
91. Plures efficimur, quoties metimur a vobis, semen est sanguis christianorum. (Tertullian.)
We become more numerous the more often we are mown down by you; the blood of Christians is their seed.
(Augustine.)
If a church is a true one, it is the one that suffers persecution, not the one that inflicts it.
93. De occultis non judicat ecclesia.
Concerning what has not yet become manifest, the church does not judge.

Dr. Hengstenberg's Position on the Questions of Ministry and Church Government.
This year's preface to Dr. Hengstenberg's "Evangelical Church Gazette" is, in its first part — in which the esteemed author expounds our Lord Jesus' words of comfort to his disciples in John 14 — altogether excellent. The courage for the struggle against the dangerous assaults of the prince of this world is thereby steeled, the fainting heart refreshed, comforted, uplifted, and thereby deeply gladdened. This exposition is a clear, full draught of the living water, offered from the divine spring that comes from God and flows into eternal life. — The more this part of the preface has refreshed us, the more painfully has the other part — the assessment of the year's most important current events — touched us at certain points. —
The questions of ministry and church government are becoming, in Germany, ever more a matter of the gravest moment. They are becoming true questions of life, for plainly the continued existence of church conditions there is heading toward dissolution; the era of state-churchism is hastening to its end; the degenerate citizens, grown heathen, want to be rid of the church, for they have become
