Gebet geheiligt (1 Tim. 4, 5.), was an manchen Orten in der Kirche, öfter

(Submitted by Pastor Keyl, Sr.)
On Betrothal and Wedding Sermons.

The betrothal should take place publicly, that is, with the knowledge
and will of the parents and guardians, and besides in the presence of
several witnesses. This beginning of married life, too, was formerly
hallowed by the Word of God and prayer (1 Tim. 4:5), which took place
in some localities in the church, but more often in the home. When one
considers how often nowadays betrothals are entered into thoughtlessly
and just as readily dissolved again, and how in particular the securing
of parental consent — even from the old fatherland — is held to be not
a requirement of the fourth commandment but only a tiresome human
ordinance, then all the more zealously should all the servants of the
church labor, by teaching and admonition, that the earlier praiseworthy
custom, according to which they too are to perform their office at
betrothals, might again become more general. This could take place in
the following way. After the singing of a hymn the pastor delivers a
short address. Thereupon he asks
