Ermahnens ausdrücklich in den Worten hervorgehoben: „Vous venez d'entendre, mes Frères, comment notre Seigoeur Jésus-Christ a institué la
Kirche in ihren

194 Report on the Right Mean of the Lutheran Liturgy.
"...institué la Sainte Cène"; *) and after the passage of Scripture, 1 Cor. 11,
23ff., is now read, the same tendency toward hearing, instructing, and
exhorting is expressly brought out in the words: "Vous venez d'entendre, mes Frères, comment notre Seigoeur Jésus-Christ a institué la
†) Quite the
same words are repeated in the liturgy of the églises réformées en
France (Uzès 1826, 4). In a similar way the consecration in the
new Württemberg liturgy has sunk to a mere hearing of the words of
institution. . . . The new Prussian
agenda is not wholly free of this tendency either; for although, according to the rubric, "the consecration is to be performed by the minister," it nevertheless says, following the
pattern of the Reformed Church: "Kneel down, and hear the words of
institution."
§ 5.
Departure from the Principle of Christian Liberty.
That in the Roman liturgy and its administration Christian
liberty is wholly and utterly denied is well known. The whole divine
service and every ceremony is meritorious and necessary to salvation both for him
who performs it and for him who takes part in it; the impartation of
divine grace, the power and effect of the means of grace, is bound to person,
time, place, and manner; the form of worship introduced by the Roman
Church has, through a false appeal to Matthew 18:17ff.,
the standing of a divine institution, so that, on pain of the ban,
nothing may be omitted from or altered in the mass canon; likewise
uniformity, or rather conformity, in the ceremonies is regarded as an
essential part of the unity of the Church.
Luther, see the citation under II, § 4, concerning the third abuse that has
crept into divine worship.
Conc. Trid., Sess. VII, Canon 13: "If anyone says that the received
and approved rites of the [Roman] Catholic Church, customarily used in the solemn
administration of the sacraments, may be despised, or may without sin be
omitted by the ministers of the churches, or be changed into other,
new ones by any pastor of the church whatsoever, let him be anathema."
But as for Christian liberty with respect to the liturgy in the case of the
enthusiasts (Schwärmerthum), this leads just as much to unfreedom as to
arbitrariness. It leads to unfreedom in that the Reformed Church, in its
various branches, seeks the true scripturalness of a Christian liturgy
in its grounding on a specific biblical command, or on a
*) "Hear, my brothers, in what manner our Lord Jesus Christ instituted the holy
Supper."
†) "You come to hear, my brothers, how our Lord Jesus Christ instituted the holy
Supper, and with what reverence and what purity it shall thereafter (en même temps)
be celebrated in his Church until the end of the world."
