durch Consequenz, also indirect umstößt.
IX.
befangen.
X.
Ueber theologische Probleme, d. i. theol.
beiden Seiten hin disputiren.

fundamental error, which overturns the foundation of faith and salvation
by logical consequence, that is, indirectly.
IX.
Non-fundamental articles of faith is the equivocal name given to
those objects of faith which, though they do not belong to the
organic structure of the doctrine that forms the dogmatic foundation of faith,
are nevertheless revealed in Holy Scripture and therefore demand
the obedience of faith from man. Here belong the doctrines of the Antichrist, the doctrine of the eternal damnation
of the fallen angels, and the historical accounts of the holy writers which
do not contain [the doctrine of] redemption, such as, for example, the birth of Moses, Joshua's miracle
with the sun, and so on.
Antithesis.
Whoever denies a non-fundamental article of faith, although he
knows that it is revealed in God's word, thereby overturns the truth
of divine revelation and is caught up in a fundamental
error.
X.
Concerning theological problems — that is, theological questions whose
answer is not clearly revealed in Holy Scripture — one may argue
either side. Such are, for example, the questions: on which
day the angels were created; concerning the particular sin by which the
angels fell; whether the Virgin Mary remained ever a virgin;
concerning the propagation of the soul, per creationem or per traducem, etc.
Antithesis.
Whoever, in attempting to solve theological problems, lets himself be led
into assertions that are contrary to the truth of divine revelation or to a
fundamental article of faith is in danger of a
fundamental error, and may, by logical consequence, abolish the foundation of
faith.
