Kirchlich⸗Zeitgeschichtliches. 93

I. America.
In

the Father gave over His eternal Son" (p. 409). "Thus Mary has cooperated in giving the Father a greatness that is infinite, and that until then He had not had in the whole world; for she has subjected His Son to Him. And in this sense she exalts and completes His majesty by the whole difference in worth that lies between the homage of creatures and that of the Son of God" (p. 411). "Now we must penetrate into the heart of this mystery (that of 'the restoration of our nature through the sacrifice of the Son of God') in order to see there the great share that has fallen to the Virgin Mary, and which entitles her to be called Co-Redemptress of the human race" (pp. 332–333). "If indeed the sacrifice of the Son of God — or, what is the same thing, if redemption has its origin and beginning in the Incarnation — then it is entirely reasonable to conclude from this that Mary has the very same share in the Redemption as in the Incarnation. Now she cooperated also in the Incarnation; consequently she did the same also in the Redemption. Three wills were active in the Redemption: the will of the eternal Father as King and supreme Ruler, who gave up His only-begotten Son; the will of this only-begotten Son as High Priest, who entered the sanctuary to offer up the sacrifice of His humanity; and the will of the virgin Mother, who formed and offered that sacrificial gift for our redemption out of her own flesh. This last will was no less essential and no less active than the other two. The will of the Father and that of the Son were to depend so immediately on the most blessed Virgin that they first obtained her consent for their work, and it was precisely this consent that carried the work through" (pp. 338–339). Jude 9.

I. America.
The sects of America frequently display a great horror of the scholarly training of preachers, as though it were a hindrance to a true, living recognition of the faith. This horror, however, seems for the most part to have its ground in an inability to do as the newer theologians do. For whenever they can adorn their papers with some learned-sounding, bombastic essay, as with a growth from their own native soil, they do so with great self-satisfied delight. A glaring example of this is found in the "Christian Messenger," the organ of the Evangelical Association, or the so-called Albright People. In it there is found, among other things, an article headed "The Kingdom of God," running through several issues. There it says, for example, in the number of January 25: "The opinion of those who maintain that the plan of Jesus was an abstractly religious one is already refuted by the creation of man as a member and crown of everything created. In Moses' account of creation, man is set forth in concrete unity and in the most living
