50 Conversion of the Jews and the Thousand-Year Kingdom.
plant his memory! Well then! how is that to happen? M.'s significance lies in his theology and scholarship. Can one speak of that without going over people's heads? His person has nothing for the common people that kindles or inspires, because one cannot relate of him a single tangible deed that would bring him close to the heart. M. has never been a man of the people, and will not become one through this observance either. Only those who make a show of the chapter on union, love, and brotherliness will be able to work themselves into a fervor over it. Those who cannot manage that will see to it that, on this occasion, they make a detour to other matters that serve the congregation's edification.
For these reasons it would have been better had the observance not been touched at all; then what the congregation has no need to know would have remained covered, and the old strife would not have been given fresh fuel within divine worship itself. Let the academies celebrate the death-day; it is enough, what already comes up on the occasion of the Reformation observance, where M. has at least so far been able to be remembered with honor.
Conversion of the Jews and the Thousand-Year Kingdom.
In a treatise, "The Jews and the Christian Church," Dr. Hengstenberg (who is otherwise an anti-chiliast) had given it as the meaning of Matthew 23:38–39 and Romans 11:25–27 that a time will come when Israel will turn to Christ Jesus and become partaker of salvation in the sense in which Christian Europe is a partaker of it today. The nationality of the Jews, whose center is now the hatred of Christ, will vanish entirely with their conversion. Against this a contributor to the Erlangen journal takes the field and writes, among other things, in last year's September number: "When the antichristian ruler of the last time gains power over all the world and over the saints, so that those who dwell on the earth worship him, and all are put to death who do not worship him and his image: then the Church of Christ needs a place where she may be kept safe from her adversary. What then, if God kept that people in reserve for this purpose — the people whom Paul in Romans 11:1 still calls the people of God even after the congregation of Christ had come to exist outside of it — so that the Church of his Son might have in it the place where she awaits the re-revelation of her Lord not merely as a sum of individuals, but in congregational form? The book of the Johannine visions tells us, in chapters 7 and 11 and 12, that it will be so." Not Christ, then, but the Jewish people is the refuge with which Christians are to be comforted against the dangers and tribulations to be expected in the last time, and to which they are to take their flight! — From the same number of the Erlangen journal we learn that Pastor Flörke too, the doughty defender of the semi-Roman doctrine of the ministry, is a chiliast
