48 Verhandlungen der achtundzwanzigſten Verſammlung

Ehrw.

To the Synodical Conference of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
of North America.

Beloved Brethren in Christ: —

We, the workers in the Colored Missions, assembled for the first
time at a General Conference, to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of
your organization, to thank God for the past activity and zeal you
have shown, and the treasures you have given to carry on mission-
work among the colored people of our country, and to devise ways
and means of furthering this great work, address these words of con-
gratulation and thanks to you.

With humble and grateful hearts we bow our knees unto our
kind heavenly Father and thank Him through Jesus Christ, our Sav-
ior, that He moved the hearts and minds of the pious and venerable
fathers of our Lutheran Church in America to organize this great
church-body, and that He has blessed it during these past fifty years,
so that it has in no wise departed from the truths of our Lutheran
Confessions. Although the Synodical Conference was organized in
a land of sectarianism and lodges and had to contend with bodies
that used the Lutheran name, she has not departed from the truth
of God's Word, but has remained faithful as regards both doctrine
and practise.

We join you in thanking God for the signal blessings bestowed
upon the Synodical Conference, as shown, e. g., in its marvelous
growth; for this body at present numbers four thousand congrega-
tions and one million three hundred thousand souls.

Especially, however, do we thank God for having put it into the
hearts of the founders of the Synodical Conference to set as their
goal the salvation of souls through the work of missions, and for
directing their attention to the colored people, who, when you began
your work among them, lay like poor Lazarus at their doors, desiring
to be fed with the crumbs that fell from your table.
