A.: „Die evangelisch⸗lutherische Gemeinde daselbst (Philadelphia) hat in
Nachrichten zufolge ganz wohl gehalten.“ (A. a. O. Seite 685.)

(Fortsetzung.)

Gotha 1719. in 8.
er so mächtig, daß er dieselbe ebenso fertig sprechen konnte, wie die lateinische;

A.: "The evangelical-Lutheran congregation there (Philadelphia) has in our
days received a preacher, Mr. Mühlenberg, of whom we hope more than we
can with certainty presume, that he will keep the congregation there in
order and in the purity of doctrine without internal divisions." (Part
III, p. 389.) In the third continuation, however, the same historian
(W. F. Kraft) writes: "We must not forget the evangelical-Lutheran
congregation in Pennsylvania, at which the new preacher, Mr. Mühlenberg,
has arrived and, according to the reports that have come in since, has
conducted himself quite well." (Loc. cit., page 685.)

(Continuation.)

Excellent as the outline is which Walch gives, in the compendium lately
noted, of polemical theology, we nevertheless hold that a Lutheran
preacher, particularly in America, needs still more in order to be
properly equipped in this field. We therefore consider it necessary to
name here a few more works which each offer a particular arsenal against
the various opponents of the pure doctrine.

a. As to the polemical works against the Roman church and the papacy, we
name before all others the following: "Convincing Instruction Concerning
the Origin and Growth of the Papacy, together with a Defense of the
Reformation. By Dr. Ernst Salomon Cyprian. Gotha 1719, in octavo." The
author of this work was born in the year 1673, on the 22nd of September,
at Ostheim before the Rhön in Franconia, was a pupil of the Jena
theologians Hebenstreit and Bechmann, and above all of a Johann Wilhelm
Baier; he became first a professor at Helmstädt, then director of the
Collegium Casimirianum in Coburg, and from the year 1718 was
consistorial councillor in Gotha, and finally, from 1736, at the same time
vice-president of the upper consistory there, until his death, which
occurred in the year 1745 on the 19th of September. Since he never held a
practical pastoral office, he also never received ordination. He was a
man of great learning; he was so thoroughly master of the Greek language
that he could speak it as readily as Latin; he distinguished himself
especially by a rare knowledge of history. His zeal for the pure doctrine
was a burning one. The most notable of his writings prove this. A few
days before his death he called his confessor and another preacher of the
city to his sickbed, with the intention "that they should be witnesses of
how he, as an upright evangelical-Lutheran theologian, through the grace
of God and upon the wholesome
