Wirksamkeit u. A. folgenden Bericht: „Es arbeiten jetzt in Deutschland 5 Missionäre und
.“

worthy conduct beyond others, everything unseemly and self-contradictory
that is contrary to their descent — as belonging to that wonderful
system chosen by God, and therefore carrying so much weight in itself
(because through it all men are of one origin, and therein lies a
mystery of his kingdom) — should be avoided. The impropriety in such a
marriage bond has been felt even by sensible people among the heathen,
whence in Roman law there is a respectus parentelae; whereas among the
Hebrews there is otherwise nothing similar to speak of in this manner,
inasmuch as relatives in unequal degrees of the collateral line are not
represented as father and, as it were, half-son, but are simply called
brothers — for example, Gen. 13:8. But for that very reason I have
already noted above that it cannot be concluded from this, by mere
counting of degrees, that a woman may not marry her mother's sister's
husband. For through this marriage nothing is lost to the reverence due,
because the woman is the subordinate party in marriage, and the
obligation which she has

toward her husband is the greater one, and does not come into collision
with the one which she previously had toward her mother's sister's
husband, but rather the two kinds of reverence simply come together and
are united. Hence the citing of equal degrees of kinship is no decisive
proof

that a man may not marry his wife's sister's daughter.
In the next issue we intend, on the basis of this excerpt from Crusius,

to communicate a table, by means of which anyone may easily find out
whether, in a given case in question, a marriage impediment conditioned
by the relationships of kinship exists, or not.

(Conclusion to follow.)

Miscellaneous Church News.

The Methodists in Germany. The well-known Jacoby, who for some years
has been seeking to spread Methodism in our old fatherland, gives, among
other things, the following report of his activity: "There are now at
work in Germany 5 missionaries and 17 assistants. Our membership numbers
450, and about 400 of our members have emigrated to America and have,
for the most part" (only?!) "joined our congregations here in this
country. We have distributed 758,636 tracts of 4 to 30 pages and 13,600
tracts for children; sold 27,904 larger books (of 150 to 600 pages) —
2,500 of which were our hymnbooks — besides that: 49,665 pamphlets of 30
to 100 pages and 24,175 writings for children. The Evangelist" (the
Methodist paper in Germany) "has 1,200, and the Children's Friend" (the
same) "1,300 subscribers."
