Wort Gottes vorzubringen pflegen.

74 Dr. Seyffarth's Corrections, etc.

...findings of science, as though these had first to make the Bible into what it already is without them. But to us it is the book of life and of salvation, whatever science may say to that, and though we should straightway become fools before all the world on that account, for only in it is the living Word of God and the pure truth, and all the books of all the sciences are, as already said, not able to snatch even a single immortal soul from eternal ruin. Nevertheless it is, when some science agrees with Holy Scripture in its results, most gratifying and worthy of thanks. Gratifying to believers, that the Word of God, the word of truth, shows itself more and more, even before the eyes of the world, to be the one unchangeable truth, and that on the one hand it is thereby brought about that those who, still weak in faith, allow themselves to be frightened and disturbed by the arguments brought forward out of science against Holy Scripture, are freed from these their temptations; and on the other hand there is also reason to hope that the truth, so far as it has been reached by science, will now also come to a certain recognition in the world, and that thus perhaps many a one will be moved to search out again the old, long-forgotten book, to inquire whether what else is reported in it may not also be true, or will be moved to go where the pure Word of God out of this book of truth is proclaimed to him. Therefore let no one despise the right, God-fearing science, since it can guard the weak against many a temptation, and can move the unbeliever to search and hear the Word of God, and so, with the help of God the Holy Spirit, lead him to the fountain of faith. But it is also worthy of thanks because science, when it agrees in its results with the report of Holy Scripture, thereby takes over its share of the hard labor of the apologetics of the Word of God against unbelief, and gives us weapons into our hands which, being respected and feared by the opponents of the Word of God, put us in a position to silence them, even if only in one series of the arguments which they are accustomed to bring forward as unanswerable against the Word of God.

Now, a book over which we are filled with heartfelt joy in just the manner indicated is the one now before us: "Corrections of Roman, Greek, Persian, Egyptian, and Hebrew History and Chronology, Mythology, and Ancient Religious History, on the Basis of New Historical and Astronomical Resources, by Dr. G. Seyffarth, Professor of Archaeology at Leipzig. 1855," which the honored author has made a gift to our Concordia College here. In this book proof is given that the chronology of secular history hitherto received swarms with errors and is full of contradictions and impossibilities. Naturally, if the matter stands so, the chronology of sacred history, measured by the faulty secular chronology, could not be found to be correct and reliable
