A plea for the Augsburg Confession etc. 75

A plea for the Augsburg Confession
in answer to the objections of the Definite Platform. An address to all
ministers and laymen of the Evangelical Church of the United States, by
W. J. Mann, Pastor of St. Michael and Zion churches, Philadelphia.
For the Lutheran Board of Publication. Philadelphia: Lindsay & Blakiston
. 1856.
12. No. 5.),
A., welche als lutherischer
belehrender kirchlicher Schriften betreiben.

A plea for the Augsburg Confession etc. 75
...if the matter stood otherwise. Even if nothing else were shown in the book before us than the inadmissibility of the secular-historical data, that alone would already be a significant gain, insofar as it thereby breaks the point off the proof so often drawn from the chronology of secular history against Holy Scripture. But now, on the other hand, proof is also given that, scientifically, the chronological data of secular history prove to be false, and those of Holy Scripture to be correct, so that in this respect too the Bible shows itself to be the book of truth.

Defense of the Augsburg Confession, as an Answer to the Objec⸗
tions of the "Outline of Doctrine and Church Discipline." An open letter to all
preachers and laypeople of the Evangelical Church in the United States, by
W. J. Mann, pastor of St. Michael's and Zion's Church in Phila⸗
delphia: Lindsay and Blakiston. 1856.
This work, which has as its motto the word of the Lord Jesus, "the truth shall make you free," is directed against the undertaking of certain preachers and professors of the General Synod to lay before their fellow synod members a mutilated Augsburg Confession as an American revision of the Augsburg Confession, for adoption. Our readers know that the Wittenberg Synod in Ohio first (see Der Lutheraner, vol. 12, No. 5), and afterward two other synods as well, actually adopted that revision which bears the name of an "Outline of Doctrine and Church Discipline," but that serious protest against it has been raised by several other synods. With the book now before us, it is not only the Reverend Pastor Mann, the author, who takes his stand among the champions of our good confession, but he and a number of zealous members of the Pennsylvania Synod, the East Pennsylvania Synod, and others, who, as a Lutheran book society, are engaged in the composition, translation, and publication of edifying and instructive church writings.
Our readers will gladly accept an overview of the contents of the "Defense of the Augsburg Confession."
