Sonntag geht, ohne andere Tage dadurch auszuschließen.

erscheinenden Blattes, Ehrw. Conrad, erklärt in der Nummer vom 1. Febr., da man
A. Organ

94 Miscellaneous Church News.
God's command to attend divine service and to keep the day holy. Such
a day is now Sunday, and it has, in addition, this in its favor: that it has
been chosen by all of Christendom, that Christendom has observed it since
apostolic times, and that the Christian civil authority sets it apart as a civil
day of rest; so that, under the circumstances that obtain, the commandment
of God not to despise preaching and His Word, and what follows from
that — namely, to keep the holiday, or to conduct oneself as befits
evangelical Christians on Sundays and holy days — necessarily applies to
Sunday, without thereby excluding other days. The Lutheran Christian
therefore has, from his own standpoint, just as pressing an obligation not to
desecrate Sunday but to observe it as anyone else can have, and moreover
his standpoint is the biblical one.
Miscellaneous Church News.
The "Evangelical Lutheran." The editor of this paper, published in
Springfield, O., the Rev. Conrad, declares in the issue of February 1st that,
since a demand is made upon him to represent the views of the synods
whose organ the paper is with regard to the "Definite Platform" and to
undertake its defense, he is prepared to lay down his office as editor. The
paper is namely, among others, the organ of the Wittenberg Synod, which,
as is well known, was the first to adopt the Platform. *) — This new basis,
on which the new American Lutheran Church was at last supposed to
consolidate itself, has thrown everything in this church into a confusion
that seems to threaten it with complete ruin. Even the most yielding among
the American Lutheran theologians, when they let their attachment to the
whole doctrine of the Augsburg Confession be noticed, find themselves cast
out by their old friends as heretics. It is now becoming evident that the
indifferentist is tolerant only toward his own kind.
Göttingen, Jan. 14. It is written from here to an exchange paper: "The
news of the call of Professor Frerich's to our university has aroused lively
joy among professors, citizens, and students."
Austria. After the conclusion of the concordat between the Emperor
and the Pope, the former is said, indeed, to have issued a fairly liberal
decree regarding the Protestants for their reassurance, but in it he has at
the same time forbidden former Catholic priests who have gone over to
Protestantism to contract marriage. — Whether, in view of this clause, the
decree ought to be called a liberal one or rather a tyrannical one is not
hard to say.
The tenth article of the Augsburg Confession. The Platform
Lutherans have now often wished to maintain that, in the tenth article of
the Augsburg
*) Mr. Conrad states, in a following issue, that while he does indeed also regard as errors what the
Platform designates as "errors" of the Augsburg Confession, he neither finds all those listed in the
Platform to be present in this Symbol, nor can he acknowledge the third, so "intolerant, offensive, and
unwarranted resolution" of those who have adopted the Platform.
