384 Kirchlich-Zeitgeschichtliches.

J. an Sup.
Juni A. C.

vom 15. Sept. veröffentlicht, worin es u. A. heißt: „Hieraus erhellt nun wohl

384 Church and Contemporary History.

office and went to Hanover. At the same time it was reported that
Pastor Schädla in Netze was also about to leave the territorial church
and was ready to take on the pastoral care of those withdrawing in
various places. In the meantime, however, this latter report proved
premature. Rather, it emerged from a report by Feldner, of May 2 of
this year, that the Lutheran-minded pastors of the W[aldeck] territorial
church had not been willing to accept those who had withdrawn without
letters of dismissal. This, together with a host of other signs,
finally opened those people's eyes, and after Easter of this year they
turned to Superintendent Feldner with the request that he help them.
He soon visited them and first constituted a small congregation in
Sachsenberg, of which he was able to report: "It is a congregation such
as we have few of, confessors mostly proved through affliction." On
Rogate Sunday of this year he held the first worship service for them.
The same thing happened afterward in Corbach, and Feldner, who had also
put himself in personal contact with men in the government circles
there, was able to hold out the prospect that these Lutherans would,
it is hoped, come to stand in their own land as we do in Prussia. These
congregations have now, after the submission of the required
declarations, been recognized by the Supreme Church Council under date
of June 2 of this year, and have for the present been assigned to the
parish of Elberfeld. The prompt appointment of an assistant preacher
for them is urgently to be wished.

Dr. Huschke has published, in Nagel's "Kirchenblatt" of September 15,
a "Statement on the Task of the Forthcoming (Now Concluded) General
Synod (at Breslau) in Regard to the Church Dispute," in which, among
other things, it says: "From this it now becomes, I think, perfectly
clear that the true seat of the sickness from which our church suffers
lies in the inconsistency of the doctrine that actually and publicly
prevails, and it follows in turn that a cure is possible only if the
church, first, by giving up the distinction — hitherto wrongly drawn in
this application — between theological opinions and church doctrine,
publicly confesses through the testimony of its synod the true
doctrine and excludes the false one from itself, and, second, also
establishes the necessary means of church discipline in order to
remove from the church whatever publicly sets itself against its
doctrine." In what follows H. says that the matter chiefly concerns the
doctrine of the church.

Diedrich's Party. Pastor Crome has issued, through Ehler's
"Zeitblatt" of September 15, a "Brotherly Request and Admonition to
Brunn and Hein" occasioned by their petition to the Breslau synod; in
it, remarkably, it says: "You yourselves maintain that the Lutheran
Symbolical Books, as the sole source from which you derive the duty of
observing church ordinances and of obedience to every external church
order, cite standing, and everywhere, and only — that is the same
thing said three times over — the principle of love and order, and
with this you naturally agree in your own opinion as well. Your
assertion, despite this threefold reinforcement, is nevertheless not
true. Rather the Symbolical Books contain — see Müller's edition, pp.
339.51, 349.2, 350.12 — together with the Augsburg Confession, Article
28, in the signatures themselves, etc., etc. — the basis on which the
Lutheran teachers of the church rightly present the external
government of the church as a duty of the civil authority. Compare
Mejer's 'Foundations of Lutheran Church Law.' Which of us, whom you
call the Diedrich opposition, has ever, on principle, rejected
territorial church government? You accuse us of a principled rejection
of church government, while you yourselves have long been in danger
of, in fellowship with Huschke, rejecting on principle, with a
mocking shrug of the shoulders, the very foundations of Lutheran
church government." So even the Diedrich party is thus not only eager
for a territorial church government, but regards such a thing as the
properly normal Lutheran arrangement!

Obituary Notes. The Stade Sonntagsblatt (no longer edited by
Dieckmann, but now by Pastor Vogelsang in Stade — this in passing)
reports: "On the 12th of this month (August) the Landrat von Maltzan of
Rothenmoor died in his 81st year, a man of whom the Kreuzzeitung
rightly says: he was faithful and steadfast in faith and life, an
ornament of the Mecklenburg nobility." — He also numbered among the
generous benefactors of several preachers of the Missouri Synod. —
