good peace between the two. Later, however, overly clever politicians declared such preaching seditious, and at their command the pastors now rebuked only the sins of the people, while of authority they always spoke on their pulpits as though there were a Christian dogma de immaculata conceptione regum [of the immaculate conception of kings]. And now that people have preached this way in German lands for about a hundred years, what, pray, is the lovely fruit of this "loyal" manner of preaching? Could it perhaps even be Jacobinism?" — This is a remark that is quite fitting now even here, in the very midst of a free state, where people are also beginning to demand of a preacher's loyalty that he himself shield the most flagrant perjury when it is committed by the authorities.
Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Prof. Delitzsch writes in his journal "Seed for Hope": "The descendants of Moses Mendelssohn (the Jewish philosopher) have become Christians. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, the famous composer of St. Paul and Elijah, the enchanting master of musical Romanticism, is his grandson. That Christianity was a matter of the heart to him could be read in his eyes (?), was proven by his life, and is attested by his recently published "Letters." Christianity was the innermost driving force of his musical creativity and poured over his musical creations, even those not directly religious, a distinctive consecration."

The Melanchthon Synod, at its meeting this year, unanimously rejected the motion to amend the constitution of the General Synod.
Pastor Fr. Krause of Winona, Minnesota, has accepted a call from the Lutheran congregation in Ellenville, Ulster Co., N.Y., and on the 19th Sunday after Trinity was solemnly installed in his office, on behalf of the president of the Eastern District Synod of Ohio, by Pastor J. G. Böhm of Rome. Pastor C. Kühn formerly served this congregation. Pastor Krause now appears to stand in connection with the Ohio Synod. (Lutheran Journal.)
The restoration of McKendree Chapel in Nashville, Tenn., to Rev. Baldwin, the former preacher of the Southern Methodist Episcopal Church, has taken place by an order of President Lincoln to the Military Governor of Tennessee. The President states that he had ordered only the arrest of disloyal preachers, and not the confiscation of the church, which is therefore being handed back to the reinstated preacher, who will of course have shown himself to be a loyal man. This is the church which the government had, at a cost of 4,000 to 5,000 dollars, refitted for divine service through Brother Cramer. So reports, with a troubled heart, the "Apologete" of October 17th, organ of the Northern Methodist Episcopal Church.
Comfort of a Servant of Christ in this Sad Time of War. On October 6th the Methodist Bishop Simpson gave an address in Mozart Hall in Cincinnati. The subject was "the national crisis." He "opened his address by stating the standpoint from which he had
