130 Theologische Axiome.

8. Τὸ δεικτικὸν "hoc" non respicit solum panem, sed totum συμπεπλεγ-
(Gerh.)

corpus Christi; prior est ἔγγραφος, posterior ἄγραφος; prior est ipsius
Christi, posterior doctorum ecclesiae. (Gerh.)

lichen Lehrer.

10. Symbola externa in sacramentis V. T. fuerunt tantum σημαντικά
προσφερόμενα rei coelestis. (Gerh.)

(Irenaeus adv. haer. IV, 18. 5.)

130 Theological Axioms.

The expression "this is my body" belongs to the formulas of presentation, according to which the subject denotes the thing taken as a whole, while the predicate expresses (only) the more important thing, the one less perceptible to the senses.

8. Τὸ δεικτικὸν "hoc" non respicit solum panem, sed totum συμπεπλεγμένον. (Gerh.)

The demonstrative little word "this" (in: this is my body) refers not to the bread alone, but to the whole taken together.

(Gerh.)

These are different propositions: This is my body, and: The bread is Christ's body; the former is used in Scripture, the latter does not occur in Scripture; the former is Christ's own expression, the latter that of the teachers of the church.

10. Symbola externa in sacramentis V. T. fuerunt tantum σημαντικά rei coelestis, sed in sacramentis N. T. symbola externa sunt μεταδοτικά et προσφερόμενα rei coelestis. (Gerh.)

The outward symbols in the sacraments of the Old Testament were only such as signified the heavenly thing, but in the sacraments of the New Testament the outward symbols are such as impart and carry with them the heavenly thing.

(Irenaeus adv. haer. IV, 18. 5.)

The earthly bread is, when it receives the invocation of God, no longer common bread, but a thanksgiving consisting of two things, an earthly and a heavenly.

(Hoepfner.)

By the words, "which is given for you," what is indicated is not the quality, but the reality, of the body of Christ.

(Hoepfner.)

There is given in the Holy Supper the body of Christ, which is given not insofar as it is risen, living, and glorified.

(Hoepfner.)

When we say that the body of Christ is substantially or essentially or bodily present in the Supper, we thereby express the object or the reality of the presence, not its manner, which we say to be supernatural, mysterious, spiritual, and unfathomable.

15. "That we sometimes speak thus: Christ's body is in the bread, happens
