162 Theological Axioms.

6. Ubicunque subjectum evangelii statuitur Christus cum beneficiis suis,
ibi vox evangelii proprie accipitur, prout a lege distinguitur.

Wherever Christ, with his benefits, is made the subject of the Gospel,
there the word Gospel is taken in the proper sense, in so far as it is
distinguished from the Law.

7. Ubicunque objectum evangelii statuuntur homines peccati agnitione
contriti, ibi vox evangelii pro doctrina gratiae accipienda.

Wherever men contrite through the knowledge of sin are made the
object of the Gospel, there the word Gospel is to be taken for the
doctrine of grace.

8. Ubicunque effectus evangelii statuitur salus aeterna, ibi certum est
evangelii appellatione praedicationem gratiae intelligi.

Wherever eternal salvation is set forth as the effect of the Gospel, it is
certain that by the name of the Gospel the preaching of grace is to be
understood.

9. Ubicunque relatum evangelii statuitur fides, ibi voce evangelii doctrinam
gratiae denotari judicandum est.

Wherever faith is represented as standing in reciprocal relation with
the Gospel, it is to be assumed that by the word Gospel the doctrine of
grace is signified.

10. Lex evangelica est σιδηρόξυλον.

An evangelical law is a piece of "iron wood" [a contradiction in terms].

11. "Nisi diserte discernatur evangelium a lege, non potest salva retineri
doctrina christiana."

If the Gospel is not clearly distinguished from the Law, Christian
doctrine cannot be kept unimpaired.

12. "Discrimen legis et evangelii ut clarissimum quoddam lumen singulari
diligentia in ecclesia Dei retinendum est."

"The distinction between the Law and the Gospel is to be preserved,
as a certain most brilliant light, with great diligence in the church."

13. "Qui bene novit discernere evangelium a lege, gratias agat Deo, et
sciat, se esse theologum."

Whoever rightly understands how to distinguish the Gospel from the
Law should give thanks to God, and know that he is a theologian.

14. Lex ab evangelio differt origine, materia, forma, effectu et objectis.

The Law and the Gospel differ in respect of their origin, their matter,
their form, their effect, and their objects.*)

*) J. Gerhard writes as follows: "The Law differs from the Gospel: 1. by
virtue of its origin and the manner of revelation of each. The Law is known in a
certain way by nature, since it was implanted in the hearts of men at the first
creation and was not wholly erased by the Fall. Rom. 2:15. But the Gospel is a
mystery entirely hidden from human reason. John 1:18. Rom. 16:25. Col. 1:26.
Eph. 3:9. 2. By virtue of its matter or its content. The Law is the doctrine of
works, but the Gospel is the doctrine of faith. 3. By
